Elon Musk just made a SpaceX FAIL video

The many crashes of SpaceX were just captured in a single video edited by none other than Elon Musk. Musk is the founder and CEO of the company, and the video contains the many failed attempts at landing their Orbital Rocket Booster before pulling out a win. This is quite likely the most expensive FAIL compilation ever made for YouTube.

In March of 2013, SpaceX first announced that they'd be equipping Falcon 9 first stages to land after takeoff. These landings were to be attempted over water, while the first attempt to land on solid ground succeeded on December 21st, 2015. The crashes you're about to see took place at sea.

The video above was apparently edited mainly by Musk himself. When asked if he did the editing, Musk replied, "Most of it." He shared the video earlier today with the message "Long road to reusabity of Falcon 9 primary boost stage...When upper stage & fairing also reusable, costs will drop by a factor >100".

The first successful landing of a rocket's first stage with a payload that was launched into orbit was completed in December of 2015. That was SpaceX flight 20 of the Falcon 9 rocket version Orbcomm OG2 M2. The landing of flight 23 resulted in the first stable FULL landing at sea in April of 2016. Previous attempts resulted in on-impact destruction of the craft's booster.

As of January 2017, SpaceX landing rocket missions are no longer considered "experimental". Since the first successful landing of one of these craft – through the August 14, 2017 launch, the company has successfully completed all landings where attempted (100% success rate). SpaceX also launched three missions this year in expendable configuration – which of course means they didn't attempt to land them at all.

One of the most exciting landings that went well took place in June of 2017. This launch was the second of two landings in a span of 48 hours – in extreme weather. Things are looking up!
