Elgato becomes Eve as it sells gaming arm to Corsair

A lot of companies will tell you that smart homes are the future, and it seems Elgato believes the same thing. Today, Elgato announced that it will rebrand to Eve Systems, which shares the name of the company's smart home product line up. It seems that Eve, which was introduced back in 2014, has been a successful endeavor for Elgato, because it will now shift its focus entirely to IoT and smart home devices.

So, with that announcement in the books, what happens to Elgato's gaming business? At least a few of us probably recognize Elgato as the maker of devices like capture cards and last year's Stream Deck, and the company seems to have found success with its gaming initiatives as well. Elgato's gaming arm isn't going away entirely, but it is changing hands.

In addition to announcing this name change, the company also revealed that it has sold its gaming business to Corsair. The terms of the deal weren't disclosed, and in fact, little was said about the acquisition in today's announcement. It sounds like Corsair will get to keep using the Elgato brand, as a video published by the company (which you can see below) suggests as much.

"Today, the Gaming space is more dynamic and exciting than ever, and we sought a larger partner to help us capitalize on the phenomenal opportunities ahead," said Elgato founder and now CEO of Eve Systems Markus Fest. "Our gaming business has been wildly successful, and that success is inextricably linked to the Elgato brand. The brand has been with us for almost twenty years and we are obviously a little sad to see it go, but Corsair is a fantastic company and will be a great new home for Elgato. At the same time our Eve product line will benefit from a focused team and a dedicated organization. This move will further strengthen both product families."

An announcement from Corsair was similarly brief and devoid of specific details, so we'll just have to wait and see what Corsair does from here. At the same time, we'll be keeping an eye on Eve Systems to see if that singular focus does indeed lead to good things for the company.
