Cox prepping Gigabit offering: launch by year's end

Following closely after AT&T's recent Gigabit Internet ambitions, Cox Communications has revealed it wants to roll out its own version of the service by the end of this year. The markets slated to get the high-speed offering will be announced in the next couple of weeks.

The information was provided by Cox's CEO Pat Esser, who spoke to the folks at Bloomberg TV in recent times. He revealed that a road map is currently in the works, and that where the service will be deployed will be announced in the near future.

A Gigabit offering is something the company has wanted to roll out for a while now, but recent developments from competitors in the same area lit a fire under its ambitions, so to speak. In an industry where "a lot of people are making some noise," the CEO said "people need to know our road map."

The goal is ambitious, and makes the ISP the first to take on the Google Fiber and AT&T Gigabit-toting duo. For now, things like pricing haven't yet been announced, but given that another announcement is set to arrive in two or three weeks with market details, this might soon change.
