Comcast taps Fandango to sell movie tickets on X1 platform

Comcast has teamed up with Fandango to bring movie ticket purchasing to the Xfinity X1 platform. According to the service provider, the integration brings both showtimes and tickets to a user's TV, enabling them to watch a movie's trailer, find a theater, and buy tickets using Comcast's system. According to Comcast, this is a first for set-top boxes.

Fandango is typically accessed via its mobile app, where users are able to browse movies currently in theaters, find showtimes at their local cinemas, reserve tickets, and similar things. Many of those features are coming to Comcast's Xfinity X1 system via Fandango, though the phone part of the equation hasn't been entirely eliminated.

The feature is apparently only available for the movie Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom initially, however, the two companies expect to expand it to cover other titles in the future. For now, customers can use the system to watch Jurassic's trailer and buy tickets.

To do that, the user first views the trailer. While watching it, Comcast explains that a notification will appear on the screen that reads, "Get tickets." Say that into the X1 voice-enabled remote control and the system will launch the ticket buying platform. This involves showing nearby theaters and their showtimes.

From there, it seems users have to tap a "Send to mobile" button that launches the Fandango app on their smartphone, where the actual purchase is completed. Obviously, you'll need a Fandango account to use it. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom arrives in theaters on June 22.
