Color returns to launch new app for Facebook

The fanfare surrounding the Color app, which made a big splash back in March when it launched with a $41 million investment from Sequoia, had quickly died down after the mobile photo sharing app confused users and generally became a ghost town. But now, Color is back and this time they've launched a new app for Facebook.

Color CEO Bill Nguyen announced the new version, timing it to coincide with the Facebook f8 developer conference today. Learning from past mistakes, this new Color app won't be made available to everyone right away. The app will start off with a closed testing phase among a group of Harvard students, before it opens up to more users.

The app is also now tightly integrated with Facebook, taking advantage of the new Open Graph protocol. Introducing the concept of "visits," the app adds a unique mini broadcasting feature.

Lets say if you're friend is at a concert and they take a snapshot with Color and share it on their Facebook status and you happen to see it in your real-time Ticker and would like to "visit," then they get a notification to share a live feed with you. They can then enable the camera on their mobile device to stream live to you. The brief video stream can be viewed by multiple people at once and privacy settings allow you to restrict who can see the streams as well.
