Civilization VI is coming to Nintendo Switch

The Switch has proven to be a popular platform for ports of existing games, with many publishers bringing their bigger titles over to the system. Bethesda has already done that with ports of games like Skyrim, DOOM, and Wolfenstein, while plenty of indie developers who have found success on PC have been doing it as well. Today we can add 2K Games to the list, as it's announced a Switch version of Civilization VI.

This is a particularly interesting announcement, as the Civilization series doesn't often make an appearance on consoles. There have been a few console-based spin offs here and there, but the last time we saw a mainline Civilization game on consoles was Civilization II on the original PlayStation. With that in mind, this Switch port of Civilization VI is a pretty big deal.

2K's announcement today was rather brief, suggesting this'll be a by-the-books port. It makes no mention of whether or not the game's first expansion, Rise and Fall, will be available on Switch, so it's probably safe to assume that it won't be – at least not at first. The Switch version will, however, ship with four previously released content packs, which are as follows:

Vikings Scenario Pack

Poland Civilization & Scenario Pack

Australia Civilization & Scenario Pack

Persia and Macedon Civilization & Scenario Pack

The Switch version will support four player competitive and cooperative play via LAN, but it doesn't sound like it'll offer online play. One question we have is how the game will control on the Switch – strategy games aren't often the best candidates for gamepad controls, but Civilization's slower, turned-based gameplay may lend itself better to consoles than an RTS like Starcraft does.

All will be revealed soon enough, as 2K Games has lined up a November 16 release date for Civilization VI. What do you think about Civ VI coming to the Switch? Head down to the comments section and let us know!
