Chromebook support boosted to 5 years

The number of years a company is willing to support a product is an important part of the decision-making process for some, with too little support negating the value of the product. Until now, Google has vowed a minimum 4 years of support for Chrome OS devices, but that will be changing soon.

The change was first spotted by Google+ user Brandon Tiller, who posted a screenshot of Google's updated Extended End of Life minimum terms. According to the company, it is in the process of updating its EoL policy for all Chrome devices past, present and future.

The extension boosts Chrome OS device support from a minimum of four years to a new minimum of five years from the launch of the devices. A device launched in June, for example, will have support until at least June five years later.

Extending the official support for the devices could entice businesses and, in particular, schools to invest in Chrome OS boxes and laptops. Check out Google's Chrome OS EoL page for specific device dates.
