Captain America: Civil War is first to use IMAX 2D digital cameras

Captain America: Civil War will be the first film that uses new IMAX 2D digital cameras, it has been confirmed. Only a small portion of the movie will be filmed with the cameras, but it is being teased that those moments — and one in particular — will be grand to behold, lending a cutting-edge-tech feel to what looks to be another exciting Marvel movie. The cameras themselves were made as part of a partnership between IMAX and Arri, and join the existing 2D film cameras and 3D digital cameras.

The new IMAX cameras meet the needs of those who prefer to shoot digitally rather than using film cameras. Approximately 15 minutes of Civil War has been filmed using the new 2D digital cameras.

Says Joe Russo, the movie's co-director, one sequence in particular has "some incredible scale to it". He continued in a statement to Variety, "When you're working on a Marvel film, there's a sense of showmanship that goes along with the movies..."

In the case of Captain America, the directors will be filming the movie in 2D and will then be converting into 3D during the post-production stage. This use of the cameras is notable in part due to how selective IMAX is about who it allows to use its cameras.
