Canon EOS R5 officially detailed - and 8K fans should be excited

Canon made something of a strange announcement today, confirming that the EOS R5 is in development. We didn't get a full reveal of the camera today, but Canon did share some of the features we can expect the camera to have. Beyond the EOS R5, Canon is also working on seven RF lenses and two RF lens extenders which will all release in 2020.

While we don't have any images of the EOS R5 yet, we do have some key details. Canon says that it's full-frame mirrorless camera that ships with a "newly designed CMOS sensor and new image processor." It'll also be the first camera in a new generation of EOS R cameras.

Canon's announcement today speaks mostly in broad terms, saying that it will "provide photographers with more efficient workflows thanks to improved transmission functionality, operability and reliability." Still, there are some specifics to be found in the announcement, with Canon saying that the camera will be capable of 8K video recording and high-speed continuous shooting that tops out at 20fps in silent shutter mode and 12fps in manual shutter mode.

Canon also says that the EOS R5 will be the first camera from the company to feature in-body image stabilization, which will be working alongside in-lens stabilization. Finally, Canon confirmed that the EOS R5 will feature dual card slots and support uploads to the image.canon platform.

That's all we're getting on the EOS R5 for now, but Canon did reveal the names of some of the RF lenses and RF lens extenders it plans to release this year: RF 100-500m F4.5-7.1 IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x, and Extender RF 2x. We'll keep an eye out for more details on the EOS R5, and Canon says it'll have a preview of the camera on hand at WPPI 2020 in Las Vegas later this month.
