Canon EOS M6 digital release date, pricing, and hands-on

This week the folks at Canon have shown the EOS M6 digital for the first time officially, along with release and pricing details. This camera rolls with a 24.2-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and a DIGIC 7 image processor with ISO 100-25600 capabilities. Inside is combination IS with five-axis image stabilization and the ability to capture video at 60p with Full HD resolution. This camera is also able to capture photos with high-speed continuous shooting at up to 7 frames per second (fps) or up to 9 frames per second with AF Lock.

The Canon EOS M6 works with Dual Pixel CMOS AF with phase-detection inside. It's able to work with a wide variety of lenses with the EF, EF-S, and EF-M lens systems – as well as select EOS System Accessories. Around the back is a 3.0-inch tilt-type LCD touchscreen display for control and viewing.

Physical controls include five functional dials with which the user can control and customize their photography experience. In addition to the main dial, this camera rolls with its own "quick control" dial for quick-access settings, as well as a mode dial and an exposure compensation dial. This camera also connects wirelessly with Wi-fi, NFC, and Bluetooth.

NOTE: Attached to the hands-on photos we have here from our brief look at the camera earlier this year is the optional Electronic View Finder EVF-DC2. This unit is smaller and lighter than the one comparable previous model. It aims to provide "high-performance viewing with approximately 2.36-million dots."

This camera is likely aimed at the expert or advanced amateur, working as their substitute camera. Canon might be aiming for 5D or 6D users here. With this camera, Canon is making clear that they're serious about the compact interchangeable lens market.

The Canon EOS M6 is scheduled for availability in two models – black or silver. Authorized Canon dealer brick and mortar stores will have the camera and it'll be made available at the Canon Online store, too. Estimated retail price on this camera will be $780 for the body only. A body-and-lens kit with EF-M 15-45mm/F3.5-6.3 IS STM zoom kit lens is estimated to be coming for $900 USD, and another kit with an EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens will cost around $1,280. The whole bunch is scheduled for release in April of 2017.
