Canon develops 250MP APS-H CMOS sensor

Canon has announced the development of a new CMOS sensor for digital cameras that has the world's highest resolution for its size. The sensor is APS-H sized and has 250MP of resolution. That is 19,580 x 12,600 pixels. The little sensor measures 29.2 x 20.2 mm and boasts the highest number of pixels or a CMOS sensor smaller than the size of a 35mm full frame sensor.

The high-resolution camera sensor can do some impressive feats. Canon says that when installed in a camera, the new sensor was able to capture the lettering on the side of an airplane flying about 18km from the shooting location.

Despite the high pixel count, the new Canon sensor has an ultra-high signal readout speed of 1.25 billion pixels per seconds. That is possible thanks to advancements in miniaturization of the circuit and enhanced signal processing technology.

Video footage captured by the sensor gives a resolution 125 times that of full HD and 30x that of 4K video. That sort of resolution allows users to crop and magnify video images without having to reduce image resolution and clarity. The sensor is likely to make it to specialized surveillance and crime prevention tools. It sounds unlikely that the sensor will be used in a consumer digital camera.
