CAMpanion mounts GoPro cameras on smartphones

The GoPro's tiny size is both a plus and a minus, depending on how you're using it in any given moment. The smartphone app and its live viewfinder feature comes in handy, but unless the camera is mounted somewhere, managing both devices at once is tricky. CAMpanion aims to solve this problem by mounting the GoPro camera onto the back of a smartphone, where it can more easily be managed using the smartphone app, and has the added benefit of utilizing the smartphone's light when in dim settings.

CAMpanion is essentially a small mounting box that slides onto a related plate, the latter of which being first attached to the back of a smartphone (or, more sensibly, a smartphone case). The camera snaps inside of the CAMpaign, then the CAMpanion slides into the back of the smartphone.

When combined, the GoPro can then be controlled using the smartphone's display, which is considerably larger than the camera's own integrated display. The mount also doubles as a stand for propping the phone up to review footage. The CAMpanion also includes an accessory mount for adding on a light or other peripheral.

The folks behind CAMpanion have exceeded their $28,000 USD funding goal on Kickstarter, presently sitting at $39,000 USD with a month and a half remaining. If you own a 3D printer, you can buy a 3D printable file of the case with a $5 pledge. Those without a printer will need to pledge $30, however, to get the unit. Shipping to backers starts in May.
