Borderlands 3 isn't in the works

If you were hoping the third installation of the fun and widely popular Borderlands franchise was in the works, prepare yourself: Gearbox's CEO Randy Pitchford has confirmed his company isn't working on the game. In an interview with Polygon recently, he went on to discuss the game and its future, as well as what Gearbox is busy with right now.

When asked during the recent interview, Pitchford said bluntly, "We are not working on Borderlands 3. That is unqualified. We have more to do in the franchise, but no there isn't a Borderlands 3." He went on to say that Gearbox loves Borderlands, and acknowledged that gamers do as well, but he clarified that the company doesn't know what the third iteration is yet. "We can imagine what it must achieve, but we don't know what it is yet."

Pitchford explained this in a bit of detail, saying: "When you think of what Borderlands 3 should be, it should be massive. It should be bigger and better than Borderlands 2. It should carry forward the story. It's probably crazy multiplatform, depending on timing. It would have to be a next-gen game and a current-gen game, if it was coming at any time in the reasonably near future."

Aside from talk of Borderlands 2 for Vita and Tales from the Borderlands, both of which are in the works, as well as the unrelated Brothers in Arms: Furious Four and Homeworld, he dropped another piece of news: Gearbox is working on two new IPs, neither of which have been discussed in at any length. Said Pitchford on this last bit:

"I'm building two original IPs for next-gen. I can't personally invest myself wholly in all of these things. So I invest myself in one or two things, and empower talent and creativity around me and beside me and in this vicinity. I do whatever I can to fuel that and let awesome people do awesome things. I love that feeling."
