Boaty McBoatface to raise awareness of Global Warming

It's become apparent this week that Boaty McBoatface, whose dreams of being a real boat have been dashed, will become an official British sea vessel anyway. It was the year 2016 when the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) asked the internet to name their newest boat. Of course, giving this campaign a public voting portal did not end how the council expected – but – BUT! There's a happy ending. Sort of.

While Boaty McBoatface was chosen in the online poll, the Natural Environment Research Council dismissed it. Instead, they chose the much more reasonable David Attenborough to name the boat after. This vessel is still named the RSS Sir David Attenborough today.

What Boaty McBoatface – as a name – will be doing instead is drawing attention to climate change in a different vessel. This other vessel is a remotely operated submarine carried aboard the RSS Sir David Attenborough. Boaty McBoatface is a cute little submarine that's going to save the world!

"But the name Boaty McBoatface lives on," said Sylvie Kruiniger of NERC. "It would have been a travesty to cast aside a name that had captured the imagination of so many people around the world. And so, at the NERC National Oceanography Centre, Autosub Long Range Boaty McBoatface was born."

"Cute though it sounds, this unmanned submarine is part of a fleet of some pretty intrepid explorers, said Kruiniger. "This month they'll begin their first mission, traversing a deep current that originates in Antarctica and flows through the Southern Ocean. They'll be collecting data for the Dynamics of the Orkney Passage Outflow (DynOPO) project as they 'fly' through submarine waterfalls and rapids, shedding light on how global warming is changing our oceans."

We'll be following the continued adventures of Boaty McBoatface as he swims the ocean blue and brings back clues about our world's future. We're all going to die as our ozone is depleted day by day!
