Blizzard gives OK to Overwatch characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

There are a number of non-Nintendo characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and considering that most of the DLC characters so far have come from properties that Nintendo doesn't own, we'll probably see even more by the time everything is said and done. One of those characters could be from Overwatch, Blizzard's immensely popular team shooter game, assuming that Nintendo and Sora Ltd. are open to having such a character join the Ultimate roster.

Blizzard, for its part, seems very willing to allow the use of Overwatch characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When asked which characters Blizzard would be willing to have appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan told IGN that Nintendo can have any character it wants.

"To the Smash Brothers team, whatever character you want, we love them all," Kaplan said. "They're all our babies, you can have any single one of them. We have 31 to choose from." When pressed further, Kaplan said that he'd like to see Tracer join Ultimate, particularly because she's Overwatch's mascot. Outside of Tracer, he thinks that Doomfist might be a good fit for Smash Bros. as well.

Obviously, this doesn't mean that an Overwatch character is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as Nintendo and Sora Ltd. would need to okay it. Still, with Overwatch on the way to Switch, it wouldn't be a bad move at all, assuming that Masahiro Sakurai and his team could work out a compelling moveset for an Overwatch character.

We'll see what happens from here, but with more DLC characters on the way beyond the 5 that were originally announced for Ultimate's Fighters Pass, there's definitely room for an Overwatch character to make the jump. With Blizzard seemingly on board, though, don't be surprised if Sakurai is announcing the addition of an Overwatch character before long.
