Blackmagic eGPU Pro for Mac orders finally open up

Back in October, Apple and Blackmagic revealed the eGPU Pro for Mac. At the time, the two companies said that the eGPU Pro would go live on Apple's website at some point in November. The external GPU very clearly missed that original release window, but it's still making it out before the end of the year, as you can now pick one up directly from Apple.

The eGPU Pro is a pretty straightforward product, as it allows you to give any Thunderbolt 3 Mac a boost of graphics power. The eGPU Pro uses AMD's Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics card, which comes with 8GB of HBM2 memory. It also ships with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, and a DisplayPort 1.4 port, so you have a lot of connectivity options at your disposal.

The eGPU Pro seems like it'll be particularly useful when using it alongside a MacBook. The presence of those Thunderbolt 3 ports means that the external GPU is capable of 85W of power delivery, so you'll be able to charge your MacBook while you use it.

It should be noted that Apple still carries the original eGPU, which these days clocks in at $699. That ships with AMD Radeon Pro 580 graphics, so it definitely not as powerful as the eGPU Pro, but it still might be a good option for folks who don't want to spend quite so much on an external graphics card.

If money is less of a concern, then you can order the eGPU Pro beginning today for $1,199. Shipping times currently seem to be a few weeks out, as Apple's estimates put delivery somewhere between January 15 and January 23. In-store pickup, on the other hand, won't be available until January 23.
