BBC iPlayer app on its way to new Apple TV

With the brand new Apple TV almost in our hands, and its ability to run native apps from its own App Store, it's time for the announcements about which apps and services are hitting the set-top box first. The BBC is one such example, as the British network has revealed that its popular streaming video service iPlayer will be landing on the Apple TV in "the coming months."

While the iPlayer app has been available to iPhone and iPad users for some time, this will make the service's first appearance on the Apple TV. Once iPlayer is available, Apple TV users in the UK will be able to stream episodes of their favorite BBC shows on demand.

BBC made its initial announcement on Twitter, followed by a few more details from BBC News. As the initial statement says that iPlayer is coming to the "new Apple TV," it seems this means it will only be available on the latest, 4th generation model of the device, and not the existing versions. This has yet to be confirmed, however.

"I am delighted that iPlayer will be coming to the new Apple TV in the coming months, helping to bring the BBC's distinctive and loved content to an even wider audience," commented BBC director-general Tony Hall.
