Assassin's Creed Odyssey announced with ancient Greece as the setting

Ubisoft has decided to announce the next Assassin's Creed game, dubbed Assassin's Creed Odyssey, a little early. Though it was likely planning to have the game be a surprise announcement during its E3 2018 press conference in a couple of weeks, a leak yesterday outed the game before Ubisoft was ready. As a result, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is getting something of a rushed reveal, with the promise that we'll learn more at E3.

In fact, the Twitter reveal simply amounts to a very brief – as in just a few seconds long – teaser trailer that basically just confirms the name and the setting. As you've probably already guessed from the title, Assassin's Creed Odyssey will take place in ancient Greece, and it seems like there could be a specific focus on Sparta.

The teaser trailer only shows a Spartan warrior kicking someone off a cliff – which is almost certainly a call out to one of the opening scenes of the movie 300 – and that's all we're getting for now. It's worth noting that a keychain featuring a Spartan helmet was at the center of the leak that outed Assassin's Creed Odyssey, so it seems like Sparta will play a big role in the game.

Other than those small morsels of information, we've got nothing. It'll be interesting to see what Ubisoft does with an Assassin's Creed game set in ancient Greece, as it's been an enduring setting across pretty much all forms of entertainment. It also isn't a surprise to see Ubisoft look at other ancient civilizations, as Assassin's Creed Origins – which was set in ancient Egypt – did a lot of revitalize the franchise.

We'll just have to wait until E3 to find out more. Ubisoft's press conference kicks off at 12:30 PM Pacific on Monday, June 11, and we'll be covering the event as it happens, so be sure to check back with us here at SlashGear for more.
