Apple touts iPad numbers, sold 15.4 million last quarter

Ahead of unveiling the iPad 3, Apple is talking iPad numbers and performance so far, which you can imagine are impressive. In just the last quarter, Apple has sold 15.4 million units of the tablet, leaping well over PC sales. In fact, according to Apple, HP sold only 15.1 million PCs total in that same quarter.

"The momentum behind iPad has been incredible and it has surprised virtually everyone," said Apple CEO Tim Cook. "When we set out to create the iPad we set out to create not just a new product but a new category. In order to do that the iPad had to be the best device for doing some of the things that you do most often."

In less than two years time, there are now more than 200,000 custom apps specifically designed for the iPad. These apps are "gorgeous and groundbreaking" says Cook and he adds that you won't be able to find these apps on any other tablet, despite there being over 100 competing tablets launched in the last year.
