Apple said to be producing new video sharing social media app

Apple, in its search to increase profits after seeing hardware sales trending downward, is said to be looking to the success of companies like Facebook and Snapchat for its inspiration. New reports say that the company is looking into creating an app that will allow users to record, edit, and then share videos either with contacts other to other social media accounts.

This report comes from anonymous sources close to the project speaking to Bloomberg. They say Apple's ultimate goal is to offer up an app that can be used with one hand to shoot video and add extras like filters and drawings in under a minute. What's unknown at this point (aside from the veracity of the rumor itself, of course), is whether Apple will offer it as a standalone app through the App Store or roll it into iOS by making it a feature on the iPhone and iPad's camera app.

Apparently Apple has the teams behind Final Cut Pro and iMovie working on developing the app, but even though there are people actively working on it, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will ever see the light of day. Bloomberg's sources point out that Apple has no problem pulling the plug on a product if it doesn't meet the company's vision, so it's possible this social media app begins and ends with this rumor, silently falling into into a future where it's never been announced.

While it may seem silly to hear that Apple is thinking of dipping its toe into social networking waters, introducing the app would presumably help Apple remain relevant as a lot of its younger users spend an increasing amount of time using Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook's suite of apps. If users are going to spend so much time each day using social media, it's understandable that Apple would want a slice of that pie.

The company is apparently looking to release the app sometime next year, depending on what happens between now and the finish line. This supposedlyisn't the only app with its roots in social media currently in development, so even if this video editing app never releases, it's possible that Apple could break into the scene another way. Time will tell, but it sounds like confirmation of this app's existence is still a ways off, if it ever comes at all.
