Apple News Plus service release, pricing, and who's involved

Apple News added magazines to the mix at an event at Apple headquarters this morning. At the event, CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, spoke about how Apple News was already known for how it "prioritizes a news sources' reputation and value of its content over the propensity of its headlines to garner tweets and likes." Cook also spoke about how Apple News was made to be easy to use, have attention to detail, be private and secure, curated by experts, personalized, and include Family Sharing.

Magazines like Variety and New York Magazine are onboard with the subscription service along with Time Magazine. Also in the mix are Wired, The Wall Street Journal, and Vanity Fair. "Apple News+ will bring you over 300 magazines across all sorts of topics," said Roger Rosner, Apple VP of Applications.

Also on the list are Sports Illustrated, Outside, Men's Health, Women's Health, Prevention, Shape, People, Conde Nast Traveler, Fast Company, Rolling Stone, GQ, Travel + Leisure, and National Geographic. These are just a few of the magazine brands that are part of the full 300 at launch.

The Apple News+ experience will be integrated with the Apple News app. In the app there'll be three tabs, including Today, News+, and Following. And it was presented onstage on an iPhone first, iPad second. But don't let that fool you – it's a system made to work on both platforms, right out the gate.

This service will cost a single monthly fee and will be similar to that of Apple Music in that it'll be part of a single bill. If you pay for Apple Music, for example, you'll pay for Apple's News+ service at the same time. There'll be a per-month cost of $9.99 right out the gate, and this service is available starting today.

While Apple's Roger Rosner said "Apple News+ is about more than magazines," it would appear that this is the primary focus, for the time being. We'll be exploring this detail to its full extent, today.
