Android and iOS see record breaking activations on Christmas day

According to analytics company Flurry, Android and iOS saw a record breaking number of device activations on Christmas. The combined total reached 6.8 million devices on that single day, a 353 percent increase over the rest of the month, which averaged 1.5 million activations a day for the first 20 days of December.

This new record number of activations is also a major boost up from the previous record of 2.8 million activations on Christmas day in 2010. However, Flurry does not break down the split between iOS and Android. Google's Andy Rubin had recently said that Android activations were going beyond 700,000 a day, which leaves about a 50/50 split between Android and iOS for most of December. But it's not clear whether the numbers were also split during the Christmas spike.

Additionally, the number of apps downloaded increased by 125 percent over the rest of the month with 242 million apps downloaded between both platforms on Christmas day. Flurry expects about a billion apps to be downloaded between Christmas and New Year's day.
