Android 7.1.1 inbound, last dev preview adds the Nexus 9

Android 7.0 Nougat is barely on anyone's devices, and we're already getting Android 7.1.1, not just 7.1, in just a few weeks! Of course, such is the fast-paced development of Android, though it's probably not going to matter much to anyone other than those already using a Google Pixel or a still supported Nexus device. Google has just announced the rollout of the second and final developer preview for Android 7.1.1 and, in addition to the already supported devices from the last preview, Google has finally added the Nexus 9 tablet to is supported list.

Android 7.1, while not a major version bump, is still a significant change for Android devices. Unfortunately, a good number of the mos interesting ones are limited to the Google Pixel duo only. That includes, of course, the Google Assistant as well as camera app functionality and, for now, fingerprint sensor gestures.

Still, there are quite a few things to look forward to in Android 7.1.1, even if you don't own a Pixel. App shortcuts, for one, is like the 3D Touch of Android for app icons. Long press on an icon and you get a menu of actions. Those icons can now also be completely circular. Android 7.1 also introduces a smarter and more colorful keyboard that supports images like GIFs and stickers.

While Android 7.1.1 will eventually roll out to OEM devices, Google's own naturally takes precedence. The developer preview is now available on the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Pixel C, and, for the first time, the Nexus 9. Considering how OEMs are just rolling out Android 7.0 to devices, it will probably take longer for 7.1 to land.

This dev preview also gives developers the go signal to start preparing their apps for compatibility with Android 7.1, especially if they plan to use features like App Shortcuts and the Image Keyboard. Android 7.1.1 is scheduled to officially roll out in December.
