Android 4.4 KitKat update rolling out to Nexus 7 and Nexus 10

For those who have been chomping at the bit for the latest Android KitKat update, the wait is over — if you're running a Nexus 7 or Nexus 10 tablet, that is. The Android 4.4 update is rolling out to these tablets today, and a promise in place that the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 with mobile data will get the update in the near future. Of course, this is in addition to the Nexus 5, which is newly released and ships with the latest Android iteration on board.

Nearly two weeks have passed since Google released Android KitKat, and since then most of us have been left out of the mix, having to wait to get our hands on the update. The Nexus 5 was launched on the same day, and comes with KitKat on board, with it having been promised that other Nexus devices would be getting the update not too long afterwards. That time has come, at least for the 2012 and 2013 Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets.

The downside is that only WiFi-only Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 owners will get the Android 4.4 update. Those with a Nexus 7 tablet with a mobile data option will have to wait longer, and while Google promises that the update will be rolling out soon, there's no specified date to look forward to — perhaps taking place when the other Nexus devices also see the latest update. The Galaxy Nexus is the only device that will miss out, though some users are trying to change that.

We've covered what Android 4.4 KitKat brings in our guide, which you should check out for a lowdown on what the new version offers. What changes comes specifically to the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 aren't yet known, though that will change soon as the update hits more owners and reports begin to surface. Don't own a Nexus device? Android KitKat will be working its way onto other handsets as well, so hang tight.
