AMD drop Phenom II prices in response to Intel

After Intel threw down the silicon gauntlet by reducing the prices of its processors, AMD have seemingly responded in the only way they could: by cutting the cost of their 45nm Phenom II chips.  While the official price list is yet to be amended (at time of writing), online retailers such as Newegg are already showing reductions in AMD prices.

For instance, AMD's Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition, which previously retailed at $275, has now been reduced to $235.  Similarly the Phenom II X4 920, which runs at 2.8GHz, is down to $195 from its previous price of $235.

The cuts bring the cost of the AMD processors underneath their Intel counterparts, but as The Tech Report point out, the two Phenom II's have higher TDPs and greater power consumption when at maximum performance.  AMD recently announced that it was divulging its handheld assets to Qualcomm, in order to better concentrate on its processor (and graphics) development.
