Amazon Pantry grocery service launches in UK for Prime members

Amazon has just announced the debut of a new delivery service for UK Prime subscribers: Amazon Pantry. The service goes beyond the Prime Now option here in the US, which focuses on same-day delivery of items from local merchants, including fresh food. Instead, pantry is the standard grocery items people use daily, including food like cereal and soup, drinks, as well as cleaning supplies. Basically, things that can keep for a while, and aren't reliant on being fresh.

Amazon Pantry orders are based on a "Pantry box" that shoppers can fill with up to 20kg of items for next-day delivery. There's over 4,000 products to choose from, and as users make selections, they'll see the items begin to fill up their box.

Pantry is exclusive to Amazon Prime members, and while some items are also available to order via Amazon Now in the UK, that service is limited to select cities; Pantry is available nationwide. There's also a wide range of non-food products that shoppers can choose from, including pet supplies, health and beauty products, and baby/child care items.

The UK has already seen a trial period of AmazonFresh, another grocery delivery option, but this time focusing exclusively on fresh produce. Should this become standard alongside Pantry, Amazon will see itself clearly within the supermarket business.
