Airstream and AT&T launch new 4G LTE system for camper trailers

Travel trailer company Airstream has teamed with AT&T to offer the carrier's 4G LTE data plans with its campers, the company has announced. Called Airstream Connected, the new offering can be used to add mobile broadband access to any of the company's touring coach and trailer vehicles. This service joins the 2019 Airstream Classic trailers that have built-in 4G LTE connectivity.

Airstream is the company behind iconic silver bullet-shaped travel trailers. The company previously teamed up with AT&T to offer 4G LTE service in its 2019 Classic, but now any Airstream owner has the option of getting mobile broadband with their trailer regardless of model.

In its announcement, the company said its Airstream Connected system includes an external high-gain antenna that is mounted on the trailer's roof, as well as a mobile router and a GPS locator. Customers who install the system can manage their service using a related Airstream Connected mobile app.

The system works with AT&T mobile data plans, providing travelers — and permanent camper dwellers — with high-speed Internet access without resorting to tethered smartphones and small hotspot devices. However, the system isn't cheap.

According to Airstream, its new Airstream Connected offering is being exclusively sold through the company's US dealers for $999 USD. The system must be professionally installed, and that professional installation is not included in the system's price. As well, the data plan itself is charged separately.
