Acer says dual-OS Android/Windows 7 netbooks are the future

Unlike Toshiba, Acer has been more tentative in its Android netbook adoption, offering a few dual-booting machines – the Acer Aspire One D260 being one of the most recent – but no Android-only versions.  Now, though, they're committing to Google's open-source OS a little more; according to DigiTimes, the company intends to make all future dual-core netbooks dual-booting between Windows 7 and Android.

That would give owners the ability to load up the full Microsoft OS when they want the flexibility of all the regular desktop apps – albeit with the power compromises inherent in what's normally an Intel Atom processor – or to choose Android when they simply want multimedia, internet access and messaging.  As we've seen with early reviews of the AC100, Android alone can be a less-then-productive experience on the netbook form-factor.

The company apparently announced a new range of dual-OS netbooks, each using Intel's Atom N550 CPU, and available in blue, green, red and purple.  No word on when we could expect to see the new Acer Android/Windows 7 netbooks; hopefully Acer decides to branch out and raid Snapdragon and Tegra 2 warehouses as well as using Intel's silicon in future models.
