30 million Nintendo Wii sold in US

Nintendo has just confirmed that it has sold 30 million Wii consoles in the US alone, making it the fastest console to reach that milestone in the history of gaming.  The Wii launched back in 2006, and hit the 30m mark fifteen months faster than the next best-selling console.

The strong growth comes as rivals Microsoft and Sony plan to debut their own motion gaming systems, Kinect and Move, in time for the holiday shopping season.  Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has previously said that he sees the competing systems as a "great honor" to the company, while also saying that the challenge Nintendo face is making the next-gen Wii experience "unique" despite generic hardware.
