2TB SD cards in the works?

SanDisk just released their 16GB microSD card for double the previous storage space of the 8GB versions. We all suspected a 32GB microSD card was in the works, but it would be a while before that came to market. Who would have suspected a 2 terabyte card?

The SD association just wrote about a new SDXC (eXtended Capacity) memory card that still has yet to have a release date. The SDXC specification that will allow manufacturers to develop up to 2TB memory cards in the future. This would provide users with a better "digital lifestyle" with capacity ranging from 32GB up to 2TB. These cards will have read/write speeds of up to 104MB per second in 2009 with a road map to 300 MB per second.

Just to give you a rundown of how much space this is, it will hold 100 HD movies, 480 hours of HD video recording, 136,000 fine-grade photos and more MP3s that you need. This type of technology has plenty of good uses but imagine walking down the street and dropping all the family photos you have taken over the last two years without even hearing it. As of right now you can't purchase one of these cards. It appears that it will be quite some time before we see these on store shelves, just don't expect them to be cheap.
