2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel rated for 480 lb-ft of torque

Ram is bragging that it is now the torque leader in both the light-duty and heavy-duty truck segments. The 2020 Ram 1500 will become the most powerful half-ton diesel truck with a rating of 480 lb-ft of torque. That high torque rating gives the EcoDiesel truck a towing rating of 12,560 pounds.

The new 480 ft-lb torque rating comes with the all-new third-gen 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel engine that is also expected to lead the light-duty truck segment in fuel economy. Ram will offer the EcoDiesel engine in all Ram 1500 models and configurations. This means for the first time Ram Rebel buyers will be able to get the EcoDiesel V6 engine under the hood.

The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will go on sale in Q4 2019 with pricing and fuel economy ratings for the truck announced closer to its on-sale date. Ram notes that the 2019 1500 Classic is offered with an optional second-gen 3.0L EcoDiesel engine.

Along with class-leading levels of torque, the third-gen EcoDiesel V6 promises to increase horsepower of 260hp at 3,600 rpm and minimal levels of noise, vibration, and harshness. The new 480 lb-ft torque rating is at 1,600 rpm and is a 14% increase from the second-gen EcoDiesel V6.

Ram cites several changes that contribute to the increased power and performance including a water-cooled turbocharger, redesigned cylinder head intake ports, increase compression ratio, high-pressure direct-injection fuel injector nozzles, lightweight aluminum alloy pistons, and a dual vacuum pump system. The new EcoDiesel is a DOHC engine with four valves per cylinder with a cast compacted graphite iron material and forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods. The 3.0L EcoDiesel is likely the long-awaited diesel that will make its way into the Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler.
