2019's Call of Duty game has an uninspired name

Just as the sun comes up every day and the snow always melts in spring, there will be a new Call of Duty game this year. You can basically set your clock by Activision's Call of Duty release schedule, so the big question in the lead up these reveals is never "if?" but "what?" In the case of 2019's Call of Duty game, what's old is new again, as it'll have a very familiar title.

Earlier today, YouTuber LongSensation took to Twitter to inform us all that 2019's Call of Duty game will be titled simply "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare." Of course, there's already a game called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and it came out in in 2007 for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and Wii. It was even remastered a few years back and included alongside copies of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Taking things one step further, Kotaku's Jason Schreier later corroborated the report that this year's Call of Duty will indeed be subtitled Modern Warfare. Whether or not this is a reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series remains to be seen, but it's hard to imagine a game carrying that title and not being a reboot.

In related Call of Duty news, we heard earlier this week that Activision has removed Sledgehammer Games from lead development duties on 2020's Call of Duty title and has put Treyarch to work as the lead studio. As a result of that shake up, 2020's Call of Duty game will be Black Ops 5 – a title that was originally slated for a 2021 release.

Regardless of this new game's title, we should be getting confirmation from Activision soon enough. Activision typically likes to reveal new Call of Duty games in the spring and then release details piecemeal as we move through summer, so an official announcement should be coming up. Stay tuned, because we'll have that information for you once Activision announces it.
