2019 Subaru Crosstrek PHEV announced

Subaru has announced its very first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). That vehicle is the 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid (not pictured) and the automaker promises that the PHEV will maintain all the capability of the traditional Crosstrek with improved fuel economy. Subaru says that the new hybrid will be able to drive like a normal hybrid or an EV for local commutes.

The vehicle will use a four-cylinder direct-injection Boxer engine and will feature the standard symmetrical all-wheel drive that Subaru is known for. The gas engine is mated to an all-new transmission and a Toyota Hybrid System.

For now, Subaru is mum on any real details about the vehicle. We have no idea how far the vehicle will drive on electric power alone. We also have no idea what sort of fuel economy it will get.

Most PHEVs have short all-electric driving ranges, tens of miles on electricity alone is likely. Subaru promises that the Crosstrek Hybrid will maintain all the off-road capability of the normal Crosstrek.

The Crosstrek is a big seller for Subaru with the model being the third most popular vehicle in the line. The hybrid model will land at Subaru dealers near the end of this year and will feature unique styling. Pricing and full details will be announced closer to launch.
