ZTE Axon is first to use Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass

Corning has been making Gorilla Glass for a long time now and the product is well received in the smartphone industry. Most major smartphone makers out there are using Gorilla Glass over the top of their LCDs to help prevent scratches and breaks. With more and more people using their smartphones constantly and sharing them among multiple people, bacteria on smartphones has become an issue.

Corning has announced that the first smartphone to use its new Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass is the ZTE Axon. The flagship device has a 5.5-inch screen covered with the new glass. Corning says that the new product is the first EPA-registered antimicrobial cover glass.

Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass has the same scratch resistance and toughness as normal Gorilla Glass with the added benefit of helping to protect users from bacteria on the screen. The antimicrobial properties will last the life of the glass according to Corning.

Something important to point out is that Corning says the antimicrobial properties of the new glass is designed to protect touch surfaces from stain and odor causing bacteria. Corning makes no claim that the antimicrobial coating will help protect users from illness causing bacteria or provides any health benefits.
