Z-Unlimited add-on for Ultimaker 3D printer lets you print tall items

Typically 3D printers aren't able to print things larger than a foot or two tall. If you own a Ultimaker 3D printer, you can now order a new accessory for that printer that will give you the ability to print items that are much taller than you can make right now. The Z-Unlimited flips the 3D printer over and moves it up along a wall as the object you are making is prints.

The Z-Unlimited allows you to print tall items like large vases, wine bottles, scanned human sculptures and other items. The orange elephant in the second image here was printed using the Z-Unlimited. The basic Z-Unlimited package includes a carriage set and 1.2-meter tall rail.

Once installed, the new print area for Z is 65cm high. To go higher than that, the user can install extra rails onto the system. A basic Z-Unlimited set will cost €495, the XXL set with a pair of 1200mm tall rails goes for €595 and the skyscraper set with three 1200mm rails goes for €695.

The Z-Unlimited add-on for Ultimaker printers is on Kickstarter right now and was seeking €15,000. So far, the project has raised over €23,000. The Z-Unlimited extension will ship in July 2015.
