The headline is trying to sensationalize a trivial issue.

Google gets to control the user experience and features of youtube app. It is a good thing and not bad as this article is trying to imply in its headline.

Self explanatory? Not really. The YouTube app has *sucked* by comparison to the browser experience for as long as you’ve been able to view YouTube videos in HTML5. It served its purpose – and now if Google wants to make a standalone YouTube viewer app of their own, they will.

It doesn’t impact, as some seem to believe, the ability to view YouTube on iOS devices. If anything, it keeps you out of the crappy YouTube app and sends you to the full-featured website instead.

Partially true, and I hope the Google made YouTube app is better. But we all know that Apple could have tried a lot harder to renew the contract. I have supported Apple and bought their products (when the were superior to the competition) for years. The removal of a basic but seemingly eternal part of iOS that I hoped to see fixed one day is hardly encouraging. I’ll probably get labelled a Fandroid and get pulled into another absurd OS war for saying this but it needs to be said. Apple is a entire year behind the competition in terms of hardware. I am not talking about 4g as it was barely relevant in 2010 and more of a gimmick. Instead, of leading the way, Apple is playing catch up with the competion (and not just Android). I think that removing YouTube was just another sign that people should turn to Google to solve their problems. I do not like Google as a smartphone software business but it seems like Apple is outdated. Even the rumors of the iPhone 5 fail to best the S3 or even it’s very close runner up the HTC evo 4g LTE, maybe… Apple isn’t as good as it used to be. The removal of one main app wasn’t not the tipping point, it’s just icing on the cake.

every time i go on youtube now they push the same content , those annoying youtube partners that i’m so annoyed with phildefranco,shane etc, nothing refreshing nothing new. worst now there’s advertisement in everything viewing sample.

If you look at Androids youtube app and maps, its FAR FAR better than the iphone versions. This is probably a good thing for Apple users, now Google can go and provide much better versions in the apps store for users, rather than depend on an OS update and negotiate with Apple on what can and cannot go in, because previously, whatever went in had to be “approved” by Apple(not like the app store approval).

This is unacceptable, Apple fix this immediately. I have wanted the YouTube app to be fixed for a long time, not dropped. This stupid OS war and lawsuits over tech that both companies likely stole or “innovated” is pushing me towards Windows.

So the fact that the contract for Apple to implement a native YouTube App expired had nothing to do with it? I am guessing that since neither Apple nor Google wanted to come to the table to renegotiate the terms of the contract had no major factor in it either…right?

Apple is shooting itself in the foot in more ways that I think they realize, not that it wasn’t inevitabel anyways but with people going to the browser even more now Chrome is better than Safari – Apple loses there too.

And even if people don’t use Chrome and they do use Safari – Google’s plans for HTML5 work out better for them.

There appears to be no lose here, only win.

Chrome is available in the app store now, though there is no way to make it the default browser to my knowledge.
Safari is seeing some nice upgrades, though. Still prefer Chrome (even on my Mac) but it’s nice to see that new features are being added.

I do not see how. The application was antiquated and the mobile web version accessible from Safari is much better. Not to mention that Google will be bringing out their own YouTube app on the iPhone that might actually see updates. It seems like a good thing. :)

They just prostitute a fee from anyone creating, supporting, an distributing their own app through itunes. With no youtube, about the top 10 website visite, why get an iphone?!

How is this a punch to Google? End-users want YouTube content and they still have a way of getting it. All Apple is doing is making them jump through a hoop to get it. It’s not as if YouTube is being replaced by some other online video provider as is the case with maps. If anything, it’s Apple punching itself.
