This is True and also a Scam.

Burn the light Bulb only 2 hours a Day. Why not say burn the Light Bulb on Feb. 29 24 hours and it will last all your life. The rebate is a way to give the company a great cash flow and over 10 % of consumers never get it.
4 Old light bulbs cost $1,00 so for $60.00 you could buy 240 light bulbs that would burn with only 1,000 hours each. it is a long time.
Ok it does say you save on elect.

This is a newer version than the existing $20-25 bulb: 10W vs. 12W, 940 lumens vs 800, longer estimated lifespan (27 years vs. 23 at 3 hrs/day). Is it worth double the price? Not likely, but one of the conditions of the L-Prize was to be a $22 bulb and that's apparently expected to be the case after (behind-the-scenes, included in the final price in the store) power company rebates. Who knows when that'll happen though.

Whoa, ElectricGuy. You're forgetting that the electricity was generated at 31% efficiency in a coal plant or some similarly low efficiency in other kinds of thermoelectric generating stations. Gas and propane both use energy to be delivered to your house as well and I don't know what choice is the most efficient, but you have to look at the whole energy production and delivery system before making efficiency claims....

This bulb is way over-engineered.
It won a very stringent contest, yes - but who cares about resisting violent vibrations and other top-of-the-line characteristics ?

I like those cheap LED bulbs that just put lots of little white LED's together - simple, low-cost.
And as the individual little LED's get brighter, these bulbs will approach 100 watts.

If it's costing you money to do so, then at least you're putting your money where your mouth is. But you would probably change your mind if you thought more about how it all works.

Incandescent and CFL bulbs are essentially all made outside the US, and if I had to choose between a US made bulb by Philips or a Chinese made bulb, I'd choose Philips. And buy some stock.

Next consider the fuel. While we don't have pure equivalency, once can easily make the case that a watt of electric power saved is a drop of foreign oil not imported. And if we're cutting imports of Middle East oil for the sake of buying US made lamps from a Dutch company and saving actual cash while doing so, then I'm all for it. You probably are too, if you allow yourself to admit it.

Saving money all the way to energy independence. Imagine that.

I wonder why people are complaining about foreign companies making lights (of any type) when this is really all about saving money. But if we must look at where the money flows, then we must look at where our energy dollars flow.

Too much flows to people who are generally far less nice than the Chinese (this discussion's current whipping boys) and who are even farther displaced from the Dutch (also banged up a bit here). If you like, too much flows to energy sources that are killing our planet (and we need not even go to global warming to say that, so please let's not have that discussion).

Saving energy is a good thing. Saving money while saving energy is a great thing. Taking money from your "enemies" and giving a bit of it to your "friends" is even more powerful.

Electric resistive heat is more expensive than natural gas (particularly with low NG prices), but much more efficient (100% of the energy is delivered as heat, as opposed to 80%+ with gas). Depending on where you live, electrical resistive heat can be less expensive than propane, with essentially the same efficiency win.

Most folks don't have heat pumps, to gain that efficiency (moving heat, instead of creating it). And when comparing a light bub against a heat pump, the payback interval is, well, lengthy for the heat pump.

Because situations vary so much, there will not be one perfect answer or application. Low energy consumption generally has payback when usage is high, but may not break even when usage is low. What value is there in putting LED or even CF lamps in a seldom used closet or basement?

Performance of different brands of LED lights varies quite a bit. Light quality and color are highly variable. If you want dimming, some do it much better than others (some cut out as high as 30% brightness, or flicker when not at full brightness).

I haven't tried this particular bulb but similar Philips bulbs have great color quality and dimming performance. Best I've seen. The only thing I don't like is that the bulbs are not particularly nice looking. I don't care for them in fixtures where the bulbs are exposed. In any fixture with a shade, the Philips are the best choice in my opinion.

Meanwhile, for those in temperate climates, older bulbs increase your air conditioning bill, so it's a wash.

Moreover, electric filament heat is a very inefficient way to heat. My heating contractor tells me when it gets too cold for my heat pump to work, it switches to an electric filament that costs 4x as much to provide heat.

So to the degree your light filaments are providing heat in lieu of a heat pump kicking in....yet another level of inefficiency.

Actually they have been selling these kind of Philips LED bulbs at Home Depot or Amazon for about $25 since last year (depending on wattage). I have several of them in my home, they work great. Not sure where the $50 in this article comes from, but the photo looks like maybe its a new model?

The problem is not that we let them make our stuff.

The problem is that we're pathetic idiots who would follow the Europeans into a volcano pit if they told us it was "progressive".
When you banter on about human rights and how, even though you just gave them technology to add thirty years to their lives, you're evil for not giving them more you can expect your country to go down the toilet!
Never in history has one group of countries got so far out front and then chastened themselves for it and literally given all of their wealth to the rest of the world, which has been waiting like villagers with pitchforks to get us back for our success.

This is what happens when the real men like Patton are silenced and the feminized "modern managers" like Eisenhower are allowed to realign the world.
Yea! And the fact that you can barely see your hands in front of you when these "lights" are "on" also doesn't matter!

You should have your house burned down if you don't buy one of these worthless lightbulbs for fifty dollars! (I'll buy one that makes it so I can actually still see at night for 4 dollars that lasts for 5 years and be totally fine with it!)

Because if you're paying 10 cents per kilowatt-hour and you run this for 6 hours a day, you'll save about $11 per year over an incandescent bulb. So in 5 years this $25 bulb will have saved you $55 in electricity, and you will be $30 ahead. Then you can give it to a friend and buy your (hypothetically) better and cheaper bulb. You'll be $30 richer and will have an even better friend. Of course, if you put this bulb where it is used only ten minutes a week, it will not pay for itself.

No, not the same rating, and apparently no longer available at Costco.
Costco - 857 Lumen 13.1 Watt = 65 Lumens/Watt
Philips - 910 Lumen 9.7 Watt = 94 Lumens/Watt
That's 44% better efficiency, folks, and if you don't care about efficiency, why are you buying LEDs when you can still get cheap-in-the-short-run incandescents, and end up paying much more in the long run?
