4 Old light bulbs cost $1,00 so for $60.00 you could buy 240 light bulbs that would burn  with only 1,000 hours each. it is a long time.

I like those cheap LED bulbs that just put lots of little white LED’s together – simple, low-cost.
And as the individual little LED’s get brighter, these bulbs will approach 100 watts.

Incandescent and CFL bulbs are essentially all made outside the US, and if I had to choose between a US made bulb by Philips or a Chinese made bulb, I’d choose Philips. And buy some stock.

Next consider the fuel. While we don’t have pure equivalency, once can easily make the case that a watt of electric power saved is a drop of foreign oil not imported. And if we’re cutting imports of Middle East oil for the sake of buying US made lamps from a Dutch company and saving actual cash while doing so, then I’m all for it. You probably are too, if you allow yourself to admit it.

Saving energy is a good thing. Saving money while saving energy is a great thing. Taking money from your “enemies” and giving a bit of it to your “friends” is even more powerful.

Most folks don’t have heat pumps, to gain that efficiency (moving heat, instead of creating it). And when comparing a light bub against a heat pump, the payback interval is, well, lengthy for the heat pump.

Because situations vary so much, there will not be one perfect answer or application. Low energy consumption generally has payback when usage is high, but may not break even when usage is low. What value is there in putting LED or even CF lamps in a seldom used closet or basement?

I haven’t tried this particular bulb but similar Philips bulbs have great color quality and dimming performance. Best I’ve seen. The only thing I don’t like is that the bulbs are not particularly nice looking. I don’t care for them in fixtures where the bulbs are exposed. In any fixture with a shade, the Philips are the best choice in my opinion.

Moreover, electric filament heat is a very inefficient way to heat. My heating contractor tells me when it gets too cold for my heat pump to work, it switches to an electric filament that costs 4x as much to provide heat.

So to the degree your light filaments are providing heat in lieu of a heat pump kicking in….yet another level of inefficiency.

You should have your house burned down if you don’t buy one of these worthless lightbulbs for fifty dollars! (I’ll buy one that makes it so I can actually still see at night for 4 dollars that lasts for 5 years and be totally fine with it!)
