Yo's new app for Apple Watch does more than "yo"

The simple messaging app Yo will soon be jumping on the Apple Watch bandwagon with its newest app for the smartwatch. If you haven't heard of Yo, it's a basic app that debuted last year to a mix of fanfare and confusion. Yo is an app that lets you communicate with friends, but limits you to just exchanging a "yo" instead of texting. Over 4 million "yo's" have been sent. Now, Yo is back in a new incarnation for the Apple Watch, and it lets users send more than just a "yo."

The founder, Or Arbel, explained Yo's new vision as he spoke at a panel in Austin, Texas at SXSW Interactive. Yo plans to be a platform for developers to send push notifications to their users. Yo has already expanded to include corporate accounts from Comedy Central to the NBA. Now, these companies can send a "yo" straight to your wrist.

Yo's Apple Watch app will do more than simply share the notification that you just received a "Yo." Users can send images and content through the app as well. Yo's popularity has also been growing outside America. Yo is pushing content around the globe and has even paired up with overseas magazines like GQ Germany.

In the past, Yo has added new features like the ability to push and track a hashtag. Overall, these changes are shifting Yo's core user base from young people with a lot of friends and a small vocabulary to companies looking to market their product to a new audience. As it moves to the Apple Watch's small screen, a two character "yo" might be just the right size.
