Xbox One controller driver for PC MIA: fan creates solution

There's little in the software side of the equation out there that the user-mod universe hasn't cooked up. If there's a piece of hardware – like an Xbox One controller – that someone wants to use on a non-traditional piece of equipment – like a PC – then they're going to figure out a way to do it. Since coder Lucas Assis didn't want to buy a ControllerMAX like everyone else, he decided to whip up some code of his own.

Microsoft is still suggesting – or hasn't denied since suggesting originally – that they'll be releasing a some official PC driver action for the PC for the Xbox One controller. Until that time, there's going to be some rogue coding going on, like this situation right here.

The following solution is not difficult, but it is time-consuming. In the end, the Xbox One controller you've got sitting beside you will end up working (more or less) like an Xbox 360 controller. If you're only in this for the rumbles, you might just want to pick up an Xbox 360 controller instead.

The file you'll be looking for can be found through this directory – but be warned: you download and load anything and everything beyond SlashGear.com at your own risk!

According to Assis, it took him just one day to make his application to make this all work. As it is a version 1.0 release, we're going to go ahead and assume that any and all oddities (like d-pad issues) will be fixed in future releases. Remember – this is all done as a labor of love, so don't flip out if it doesn't work perfectly right from the get-go.

If you're one of the very, very few people out there owning an Xbox One controller but are sill undecided on the Xbox One itself, have a peek at our Xbox One Review to make the jump.
