I'm really getting tired of this stupid rumor. They can already get the same effect by releasing games by download. It's that simple. If the developers actually believed this was a real problem they wouldn't release games to disk. ...But then again, this is the same Microsoft that came up with Windows activation and Windows Genuine Advantage.

If you don't like it, why buy it? Seriously if a new console doesn't look good to you, the answer is simple, DONT BUY IT!! :D. Pros/Cons it if you must, see if switching to a nice computer is a viable option. which is CHEAPER in any case. Think about it, every1 who would have an xbox has a computer. Each cost about $400-$500 (if you have a cheap computer), bringing the grand total to $1k. Why not just buy a $1k computer for the same price? It will do everything that a console can and more (like MS word, typing reports, google, etc). You also do not have to pay for XBL anymore. ($50/mo) With the money saved there, after 3 years if you need a computer upgrade, OMG LOOK! You have $150 saved from not buying XBL to help you upgrade ur Graphics Card! (if you even need too).

Computer is the answer ppl, really, it is

Edit- I forgot XBL jumped in price to $59.99......

Where are you getting the info saying that PC"s only last 3 years? My LAPTOP is only 2 yrs old with 4gigs ram and a small graphics card. Launch day I bought swtor and was able to play medium graphics very nicely. I have also upgraded my ram to 8gigs for $40. My laptop only cost me about $550, so mabye a 3 yr limit on that is correct (time will tell). But if you had a $800 computer with idk, 16-32 gigs of ram (ive seen prices this is possible) and a nice processor, that should last significantly longer than 3 years. And after you factor in the cost of XBL ($50/year), the cost for each do not seem that much different from eachother.

Here is my take on the console vs pc battle appearing in the comments..... The console is a better platform for consistent performance. When you go to the store and pickup a brand new PS3, or Xbox game, seven years after launch you know without hesitation that it will play on your system very well, now if at the same time you bought an $800 PC and 7 years later you pick up the latest big ticket game, you will be very disappointed to find out that another $200 video card will now have to be purchased to play at any decent FPS and still have it look acceptable.

Alternatively PC gets the nod for bleeding edge graphics and technology at the cost of maintaining a shorter life cycle, many times a cycle of about 3 years.

So to play great games a console will cost you $500 launch day and as long as it doesn't blow up, you will have no other upgrades necessary to play the newest great game 9 years from launch - for a $800 pc, you could be looking at a new system every 3 years for $2400...

My money is on consoles sticking around at least for another generation

You know we have all this knowledge and graphics and all they are worried about who is going to build a better system. Lets get back to basics and put more effort into getting the games right. Look at espen 2k5 gridion and smash court tennis 3 and MLB 2k11 games where you have shadows moving as you play a game aswell you are playing in the evening and then goes to night with the lights on awesome. These days we have when you play tennis or soccer and the shadows and shade stay in the one place boring. Lets get this shit right before we start building a new system

I am sorry but an always-on internet connection is not the answer. Consoles are generally targeted at Families with casual gaming in mind or gamers who do not have the disposable income for a computer (Yes I am well aware a computer can be cheap but impressions DO matter IRL)

Not only do I know a fair few people who do not always have internet plugged into their console but I also know people who's internet is unstable, they are in a dial-up only area or they arn't allowed to have their console on the internet.

For PC's I can kind of understand the desire for always on internet connection but for consoles this needs to wait another generation first. Your not going to stop piracy your only going to slightly increase the time it takes to pirate.

Assassins Creed 2 is available for piracy and Diablo III (Requires always on internet) will most likely also have something similar, maybe not now but in the near future)

I think They need to focus on finding ways to provide services that come with a legitimate copy which would make it worth buying the game instead of pirating. For me on PC Steam provides me a friends list, Game Management, Server Management (For games that support steam multiplayer) and online backups of previously purchased games. If I pirate Skyrim I will not get those, I must buy the game to get them. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo need to think with the same mindset.

Actually, video games were not born on consoles. They were born on large analog computers back in the 1940s. Plus, you CAN play a PC game the exact same way that you can play a console game. So, both of the points you were trying to make here failed so bad that it's starting to look as if you may be the child. :)
In addition, you don't have to be a nerd to hook a computer to a HDMI television and use a bluetooth remote to control the game from the comfort of your couch my friend. Just something to think about next time you try to make these points.

Always on? Way to screw over the military. You won't be getting any of my business. Example, I'm in the US Navy and when I go out to sea for 6-9 months I look forward to playing a game or 2 to unwind off shift when possible (working 12 hour shifts 7 days a week, sometimes a lot more than that). We are not allowed internet outside of the controlled ships computers (when it works) while on deployment. So this new Xbox won't work at all for any of us. GG.

I don't remember implying that. You would have to take into consideration a TVs cost because it's necessary to play a console on. Just like a TV, a monitor doesn't have to be purchased every time you upgrade your PC. You also don't have to buy an entirely new PC every time you want to upgrade. Getting a bare bone PC that simply had the specs of a console wouldn't be that far from each other in price and the computer would have much more utility.

You do realize your console is just a computer that can't be upgraded without breaking the ToS and modding it. You can use console controllers, joysticks, keyboard/mouse, whatever you want on a PC. You can even use a TV if you'd like. Way to call someone a child then take the stupidity up a level. A console gamer calling someone else a nerd? Something tells me you aren't even old enough to drink.

Well, you are mistaken. When you buy a game from XBLA you're given two licenses: one for your account, and one for your Xbox. With those licenses, anyone else can play what you've purchased on your Xbox, and you can play games you've purchased on anyone else's Xbox. The only time you have to remain logged in to XBL is in the second situation where you're using the license attached to your account.

Well, that's a HUGE market. There are a lot of people, maybe even 1 in 10, that can't get access to broadband. You can bet that Microsoft isn't going to take a 10% hit on their profits when there are other, easier ways to achieve the goal of halting used game sales. I mean, we're talking about hundreds of millions of dollars here -- they'll make it work. It's in their best interest to give you access to the games that you want to buy.

Heck, I wouldn't put it past them to implement some kind of automated phone authentication system not unlike what Windows has when you need to authenticate without internet access. Buy a game for your Xbox, drop in the disc for the first time and call a 1-800 number. Give them a few dozen numbers from your screen, they give you a few dozen numbers back and bam! You're playing your game and you never have to call them again.

About a year ago I gifted an extra XBL-downloaded copy of Gears of War to my sister so we could play it system-link. It wasn't until after I'd already spent the $25 that I realized I couldn't find my personal DVD (I know, I know for shame!). After tangling with our two Xboxes for an hour I discovered I could start the downloaded game on both consoles at the same time and even play co-op IF we traded our accounts around so that she was playing on my Xbox with her account and I was playing on her Xbox with mine. The only catch was that her account had to stay online for it to work.

So, my guess is that a one time use key on a piece of paper will come with store-purchased games that you'll have to punch in to play. It'll be just like it is now in that that key will give you a license attached to your Xbox and a license attached to your account; the DVD/BD will only be there so you don't actually have to download the game.

Seriously??? (extra ? FTW) Console games are pirated equally if not more than PC games. My friends have so many Chinese knockoff versions of Xbox and PS3 games. Why do you think they are requiring this internet connection? It is to provide another source of DRM. Same reason the PS4 is going internet only as well. It has been leaked that both are even considering doing away with CD/DVD/BRD drives. So now it really is a PC, without the functioning PC part. Add to this the fact that the PS4 might not be backwards compatible and it would basically seal the deal console gaming (for me anyway).

Steam and Origin have also been making great sales in the PC market and the growth of PC games sales over the first quarter this year has grown substantially.

Well if it requires always on internet, that's me out! I can't get cable as the property is to far back from the street for Optus & as I don't have an active he phone line can't use great 3rd party comPanys as Telstra has said only a 'Buffered' connection is avalable via their copper to the exchange!
So it's either ridiculously expensive Telstra(Foxtel) Broadband or superslow 3/4g so-called broadband which wouldn't be fast enough for gaming, but maybe for D'loads & this copyright thing on new console!!
Telstra really piss me off 'Buffered' yet if I wanted a connection w' them they'd find space! Open telco competition my arse!
Anyway barring always on Internet sounds awesome!

Rofl, calm down buddy. I don't care either way, Microsoft and Sony have just been milking money off console gamers (myself included) for a long LONG time. Ofcourse "brand name" gaming desktops are overpriced. But if people stopped buying consoles, and more titles were developed around/for PC (which most newer titles are anyway, because current console specs are ancient), prices would drop.

I was more disheartened by the fact that things that used to define a console as a separate tool for gaming are slowly evaporating. And now your expecting me to use internet connections ALL the time and pay $50 a year for it. Lets factor those $50 a year your spending for Xbox live. Its been out 9 years, that's an extra $450. So really the system cost you $850 over its life time. The beauty of older systems is that you didn't need to pay that, now that you have to be connected, I don't know...
