Next gen console means next gen games… Big big games!

On my PS3, it takes about 2 days just to download a game demo. I’d hate to see what a whole, big game takes!

Only cities have good enough broadband to support this, rural areas in UK absolutely suck, averaging about 1mbps.

Microsoft is pretty much saying goodbye to most of their audience, if these rumours are to be believed.

I’d rather buy the upcoming Valve’s steam box to run pc games which are lot cheaper these days if Microsoft is not gonna allow used games to be bought and sold. I hate downloading anything, takes too long (10GB game). I’d rather pop in a disc and play instantly.

doubt that it is pretty dumb..there are laptops and ultrabooks out there without optical drives ..example apple and their macbook air..and people dont care..i will say its dumb in terms of i dont want to wait forever to download a game when i can drive to wally world and purchase it and be back playing it quicker than paying and downloading it

the average consumer doesnt really care about blu ray they are still to expensive for regular people to purchase like that…and apple is moving forward just as they did with floppy drives being phased out soon discs will be phased out

I bet alot of retailers won’t carry the new machine then. From what I’ve heard they don’t really make any money off the machine due to the price so there is no room for profit. The profits come from the games. So if there are no games for them to sell you will have to get the machine directly from XBOX. It’s a smart business move in the sense it cuts out the buying and selling of used games and alot of inventory sitting on store shelves. So we’ll have to see how this works out. It won’t prevent me from buying the new machine. I hope they have a “try” before you “buy” option on their network.

I love how people take this information as factual. This is by far one of the most entertaining rumors I’ve read concerning a next-gen console thus far. :) You guys should just wait until more official PR is released by Microsoft…which may or may not be anytime soon…but I guess I don’t mind reading idiotic articles like this in the mean time until everyone learns the truth about it all.

Why should the games be cheaper? When you buy a game you’re not paying for the media, you’re paying for the development and distribution. The cost to press & ship disks is probable the same as providing server capacity to distribute the volume of games.

Are you trolling or for real?? If you are for real, you must have thought DVD was a “scam” because it was backed by the movie industry. VHS too. And in no way, shape, or form was BluRay ”an obsolete technology when it launched”. 1080P. 3D capability. 50GB of storage. Loss-less audio. Highest range of Hz. Yea sounds like there were sooo many other mediums and formats better then this. And BluRay and its organization has nothing to do with gimping Netflix. You can thank that to the greedy movie studios in charge of digital distro for asking for too much money to have those titles on launch day. Idiot.

I agree. DVD and BluRay sales are still pretty solid. BluRay is touted as the current high tech medium. Going to a no optical drive system, is pretty dumb. I bet you one of the reasons for it, among many, is that they lost out on the whole BluRay vs HD-DVD war and don’t want to have to pay Sony (and its other contributors) royalties for using that drive. Also, considering that the US still doesn’t have a huge Broadband footprint, downloading next gen games will take FOREVER, even if you have a great broadband plan.

if 720p was good enough for you then ok…. I for one love my bluray player. I can somewhat agree that it was perhaps backed by the film industry, but digitally distributing a movie up to 50GB is shit. I speak English, my wife is Russian speaks German as we live in Germany. The ‘Legal’ digital distribution means don’t cut it for us. Bluray allows to both watch a movie at Full HD on a projector with either subtitles, which is really important for us…..each to their own!

I welcome this with open arms. I’ve completely resisted the BluRay format scam knowing that some form of XBL, Steam or even iTunes digital distribution is the most convenient and logical method for receiving HD content.

BluRay was an obsolete technology when it launched. The only reason it still exists is because it’s heavily backed by the movie industry. They have a strong vested interest in seeing you fill your shelves with yet another worthless media format. That’s why they gimp every digital distro service, like Netflix, by restricting releases. They want you to buy the BluRay for that sweet markup.

For people with poor internet connections, I’d imagine MS will have kiosks at your local game store. Drop in your storage and download a game. Bring it home and play.
