In what probably shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, Microsoft has confirmed that yes, the Xbox 360’s successor is already being worked on. According to Microsoft EMEA (European, Middle East, and Africa) vice president Chris Lewis:

“The consumer won’t let you [rest on your laurels], the developers certainly won’t let us. So that’s happening right now. You’ll see more [on a new Xbox] over time…certainly we’re not talking about the next version yet. So give us a chance to catch a breath, will you?”

Guys, please take your time; we haven’t yet finished this round of “console X is better than console Y,” and I think I need at least three years before I’m prepared to go through the “next-generation console holy wars” again.

I have a few questions. How much will it be? What will it look it? What features will it have? What can it do? When will it be released? What advancements have been made? What makes the Xbox 720 unique?

Are people never satisfied? What is wrong with the PS3 and the Xbox 360? Is technology not good enough right now for a while? Come on! The world should be quiet for like two seconds and let Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo take a break…all three companies are competing for the number one console, but in our eyes, its still not out there! I am perfectly satisfied playing Call of Duty 3 on my Xbox 360…why in the world do I need an Xbox 720?…give me a break…save up $431.92, and buy a premium Xbox 360 console, and shut the hell up everyone…

sorry for that little outburst at the end…

  12. I guess all i really want to do is push Playstations face in the sand. Sony has the hardware to be boss, but it will take at least 2 years before they make true PS3 games, and a year before developers learn how understand what the PS3 can do . That said, playstation wont be making another console for a long long time. Think about how much money they lost just trying to beat the 360. Microsoft didnt put that much money into the 360 they actually made a profit. So yes, the 720 is going to rain over all console and i cant wait to see what it will be. Xbox live changed how i game forever. i might buy a PS3 in 2 years when the cost comes down and some real games come out, but Xbox would have released the 720 buy then and guess what! Sorry Poppie Station tre im sticking with gates. we should all smash the 25 Playstations that they made hahahaha and save them the cost of return shipping ..

agreeing with geometry, the ps3 will end up being a better system but, with the 360 having much better games and xbox live i will be sticking with microsoft. With the 720 in the early stages of production it will $h!t on the ps3 because microsoft knows what it is up against and will produce a system that none of us would of even thought of a year ago.

To some of you: it’s REIGN, not RAIN.

Not until recently have I realized that I don’t really hate the PS3. In fact, if I was ever offered one (for a reasonable price, of course), I wouldn’t mind buying it. I just hate Sony heads like Ken Kutaragi who persistently brag about the system’s capabilities. When you look at all of the tech specs, the PS3 is obviously the more technologically sophisticatd system. But when it comes down to the bare essentials, how much of that processing power is actually attainable by game developers? Not much. Idealistically, the PS3 is superior to the 360, but REALISTICALLY, the systems are equal. If Kutaragi realized that, then I probably wouldn’t hate Sony as much. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Thus, because Sony is so arrogant, they think that the PS3’s success is garanteed. But this arrogance blinds them from the truth that it takes more than promises of amazing graphics and just good graphics to attract costomers. You need to IMMERSE the player into the game. You have to make them believe that they are a part of the game world. Graphics are only half of the formula. And the process of immersion is a continual effort. Sony’s arrogance deters them from realizing that. As a result, if a customer bothers to pay $600 for a single system, then obviously, he or she expects that that company realizes everything I have discussed and will fufill their promises. But you can’t expect that from Sony. Thus, for $600, I don’t expect to be getting much in return. On the other hand, Microsoft seems to understand this. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have created the hassle-free XBOX Live network.

I’m siding with the XBOX 360 because I’d rather pay $400 dollars for system made by a company that understands game immersion entirely than pay $600 for a system of equal value made by a company that understands game immersion only half way.

It’s not the PS3, it’s the people who made it that suck. In my eyes, the PS3 COULD HAVE been great. But Sony just f-ed it all up.

I’m, by far, an XboX fan, but come on people, the PS3 out performs the 360 on most levels. We would all be PS3 fans if it had the games to support it, but really, Final Fantasy is what is keeping the PS3 alive, imo. BlueRay OVER doubles the quality of the DVD feature on Xbox and your “at-home” DVD player. Also, the TPS (triangles per second) and the processor is faster/greater and cooler (temp wise) than the 360.

When you look at actual numbers, the PS3 outperforms the 360, but there comes a point when the gamer doesn’t really notice the difference between 3.0 million TPS and 4.5 million TPS and really the only difference we will see is the load time, which doens’t really matter that much.

All of you who argue over which system is better are f***ing stupid. Yes, I do have a 360, no I won’t buy a PS3. Why? Because for one, the 360 is cheaper. Second, the only reason Sony says the PS3 is so great is because a blue ray DVD player costs like $1200!!!! The graphics are the same, comparison results showed the 360 was better graphically than PS3, but only because Sony doesn’t have the same software technology as Microsoft, and never will. End of Story.

Snowboarder really likes to make stuff up, and totally disregard videogame media. Oh and the guy that does’nt like the power brick, put it behind your tv and voila you dont have to look at it. Look at it this way. Xbox live costs money. $50 bucks a year with a renewing subscription. When you pay for something, that money goes back into the technology thus, improving it everyday. The lighting engine on the 360 kicks the shit out of the playstation 3 and that my pre pubescent little friends means the world in graphics. Maybe you should look at naked pictures of your 90 year old grandmother. Perhaps then you would lose your naieve and blind boner for sony. Got news, I have all 3 now, and my 360 sees way more play than the other 2. Get a job and deciede for your self.

Here’s something of interest that some of you might like to read.. This is actually from a developer of all formats and pc games. And these are his own words..

Being a video game developer (I develop for both, Playstation 3 and XBOX 360) people ask me almost daily which platform I think is better. These are my personal feelings, in no way does this reflect my employer.

    Short answer: XBOX 360.

Long answer: Price, performance, visual quality, game selection and online support. I think the XBOX 360 wins in every category.

Price: This is obvious; the XBOX 360 core is only $299. The PS3 is around $499 for the 20GB version. It comes with a hard drive, but you don’t need a hard drive to enjoy a lot of great games on the 360 so I think it’s fair to compare both core systems.

Performance: On paper, the PS3 is more powerful. In reality, it’s quite inferior to the 360. Without getting into too many details, the three general-purpose CPU’s the xbox360 has are currently FAR easier to take advantage of than the SPU’s on the PS3. I suspect a few years down the road some high budget, first party PS3 exclusive titles will come out that really take advantage of the SPU’s and do things the XBOX 360 can’t, but I don’t think the console is worth buying based on this speculation (for some it will be though, we’ll have to wait and see how these games turn out).

Graphics: The XBOX 360 is a clear winner. The GPU is more powerful. It has more powerful fillrate, and far more pixel and vertex processing horsepower. Part of the reason is their choice of memory, and architecture of pixel and vertex procesing. I can’t get into details but the same vertex shader will run much slower on the PS3 than the XBOX 360. The 360 also has a clever new way rendering high definition anti aliased back buffers. To accomplish the same effect on PS3 is prohibitively expensive. For this reason I think many games will have no choice but to run in non-HD resolutions on the PS3 version, use a lower quality anti aliasing technique, or do back buffer upscaling. The end result in all cases is going to be noticeably worse image quality.

Game Selection: The XBOX 360 has a huge head start here. 1 year is an eternity in gaming. Almost all multi-platform developers have made the XBOX 360 their primary platform due to timing of release-to-market, this means the games will look and perform better on the 360. The PS3 versions will be ports of the 360 versions. (The opposite was true for XBOX 1 vs. PS2). The XBOX 360 is also far faster to develop for due to better development tools (massively popular Visual Studio .NET vs. proprietary, buggy PS3 compiler and debugger), better documentation, and easier architecture (3 general purpose CPU’s vs. 8 specialized processors that require DMA). Timing has also caused all next-gen middleware developers to make XBOX 360 their primary platform, and they will ‘add ps3 support’ as needed. This support will probably be inferior to the XBOX 360’s due to manpower and more importantly, demand. It’s this catch-22 now that will continue to drive the 360 forward and hold PS3 back.

The other obvious point here is that right now the Xbox360 already has a very impressive line-up of titles on store shelves; the ps3 just launched, and has virtually nothing of interest. Also, many 360 games are already discounted ($35 for Fight Night 3 on Amazon). PS3 games are all full price since it just launched.
Live: Microsoft’s online support with XBOX1 was phenomenal. They built in-house experience, user base, facilities, $$ commitment from executive level (since it proved successful), and most importantly, feedback from 100,000s of XBOX Live subscribers. Playstation 2’s online support sucked. They are now playing catch-up, trying to emulate Xbox’s model. But they had their hands tied just trying to make the PS3 work, it was incredibly ambitious (blu-ray etc.). I haven’t seen it yet, but I seriously doubt the quality will be anywhere to the level of XBOX 360.
HD Content: The PS3 comes with one built in (blu-ray). The XBOX 360 offers HD-DVD as an add-on for $200. You probably don’t care about HD-DVD right now. But you will soon (The quality between DVD and HD is comparable to VHS vs DVD, if you have the right TV) so I suggest paying attention to the war that’s begun. There are two formats: HD-DVD and BLU-RAY. Basically if you rent a BLU-RAY DVD from Bockbuster, it won’t play in your XBOX 360 HD-DVD, and vice versa with the PS3. The implications of this format war would require another article on its own. But as far as the consoles are concerned, the XBOX 360 wins because the DVD player is a separate unit. Playing movies is very taxing on the DVD reader, and let’s face it. In 3 years when your PS3 DVD drive goes out due to playing lots of movies (PS2 was notoriously bad about this) you will have to go buy another PS3. With the 360, you’ll just chuck your HD-DVD player, and go buy another one at the store. In 3 years standalone units wlil probably only cost about $99-150. Another point for the XBOX 360, is that I don’t know who will win the format-war, so I would rather wait with purchase of a HD player. The PS3 doesn’t give you this option.

PS3 controversy: Shootings, Wallmart fights, $15,000 Ebay sales etc. My advice is ignore it. It will pass soon.

Well with what I just left for everyone to read, I would like to say that I myself am a hardcore pc’er..And my gaming is actually on a 11′X 7′ screen projected at a native 1280X720..Or actually 1280X768 or 750P.The reason that I bought a 360 is because of the fact that when you have two giants like sony and microsoft bringing their billion dollar investments to the battlefront against each other for reign over our dollars, PC games fall very short for about a year. Or when released, are released much later to help support the console benefits..Now, with DX10 around the corner, and waiting on games worth my while for the pc.. I bought a xbox 360, AFTER the ps3 came out..And something I noticed that suprised me was, the lack of the ps3 itself actually drove people to buy more 360’s.. Christmas coming and a lack of puts you going to the other corner of the ring.. I actually bought the last 360 that was at the store and the last copy of gears of war, only because an employee of mine worked at the store as part time around Thanksgiving.. HMMM, Makes you wonder if sony had thought that one out very much?
As far as Japan games,I will have to classify that in a big category of “WHO CARES??” Half the games from there don’t fit most us agenda, and vice versa..It has been like that since probably before the first ps1.. I will have to say that gears of war runs absolutely flawless and as far as gaming goes, EPIC’s team did an awesome job of something refreshingly new and extremely addictive..I have over 700 dvd’s and really use my pc and upscaling to enjoy them over the 360..Much more video control with a pc and powerdvd 7 does a great job.The ps3 upscaled still can not give all the control that comes with pc driver’s and a decent video card..So, the dvd playback is fine, but NOT the reason I would buy either sysem.. That’s for sure…Ironically the biggest eye candy that I have seen yet on either pc format or any other would be Call of Duty 3..I am a true gears man, but it has nothing on the raw beauty of COD3, and the amount of action actually makes you feel like a small prt in a very big and busy war… Gears on the other hand makes it more personal…Ironically, COD3 has the best water simulation that I have ever seen in a game.. Great work for a developer that DIDN’T make the first two installments of the game..
So with all said, the 360 has past my expectations in many ways.. Believe me when I say, it would take a bad *** pc to topple the action and all rendering with no frame loss at 1920X1080P.. And the 360 is easily playing the roll of the little engine that could…
It’s a shame that Resistance couldn’t be on the 360 as well.. It would have been fun to compare the frame rates of the two I think..
I hope that all platforms do well all in all.. Weither a game can run this resolution at this frame rate shouldn’t be the question.. But as long as the games are fun and truly are next gen to me is by far more important.. And I’m sure that the ps3 and 360 will have that taken care for us in the years to come..But I personally never see me becoming a big Wii fan.. To me it’s the settling for a Monkey Vomit green 1979 chevette, in a world of high definition ferraris..Just not in the same category. And I personally think that even the name is lame… Even the much anticipated Zelda, is IDENTICAL to the game cube version…If something of that nature happened to me with my 360 and my xbox, I would sell my 360 immediately and swear to every living person that I never was a fool big enough to buy their NEW NEXT GENERATION system…I think the wii is perfect for the people that have just bypassed Barney tapes and maybe Blue’s Clues..Or maybe just teething.. Or if you are 80 plus and in an old home and personally never see yourself playing bowling ever again.. Or the outdoors for that matter, and would like to have some big bobbly head character to waste your little remaining time with til’ you get that big calling of bright light and go join Grandma.. For the rest of us,what does this system have to offer us?It could have been a $30 controller added to the game cube and been done with it.. So for that matter, the price of newly named game cube with a crzy controller is way overpriced and can easily be seen as the biggest rip off pricewise of the three. If I ever had anyone ask me if I had a vga connection or dvi so they could hook up their wii in high def? I would try my hardest to not laugh while answering with.. Why, Would it really matter? Followed by, Go hook your Mickey Mouse game through a s-video and be done with it.. : 0) OK, no more bashing on the wii, for it surely is something that I must not understand…My gaming will be cutting edge and leave the Mickey Mouse characters that star in their games way way behind..I tell you, Not even if I owned a preschool!!! : 0)

woooow….. xbox “720″ are you people serious? that doesn’t even make sense. 360 (meaning 360 degrees) is the measurement for a circle/sphere. 720 is nothing, all it means is something goes in a circular motion twice. xbox 720 is the stupidest shit i’ve heard its not going to be called that, it doesn’t even make sense.

Well….the developer guy is right in current sense because at the moment developers are really only using the 2 cores in the ps3 hardware rather than taking full advantage of the 7 SPE’s but dont forget that when the ps2 came out most developers didnt use all of its abilities. The ps3 will outperform the 360 if developers can fully use its power. And i expect them 2 not now but in 2 years time. So…if u want 2 buy a console now my advice buy a 360 or a wii but if u want a console in 2 years time then get a ps3. I got a 360 and my ps3 is in pre-order. I live in europe. So….cya ppl

And I read somewhere that sony’s PS4 (Code name Deep Thought) will be the size of a small moon, however only one will actually be built, and Sony will sell small transporter devices shaped like wristwatches which will send, or “beam” people into the very heart of the GPU, where they can interface directly with the game of their choice.

However, in a sneaky twist, the real purpose of the device will of course be to harness people’s thinking ability to answer the ultimate question:
How can we maximise profit, while at the time minimising expenditure?

As you can see their current attempt failed to answer this question very well….

    I am a crazy Ratchet Clank fan and I here they are making a R C 5 for PS3
I have a PS2 and am not planning to get a 360 or a Wii but if you have seen the comments from the 200 or more sites comparing the consoles like i have then you would agree with me.
More than 50% said PS3 will wipe out the 360 as the blue ray disc reader and if you have a HDTV will make the Graphics 3 times as better as the 360 and a new little trick sony have learnt is the new real time gaming format in which nothing will ever be the same in the game no-matter how many times you play the same part. The PS3 is a hard drive also so that chops of another reason why you would want to buy the 360.
Around 35% said that the 360’s title as the “ultimate gaming machine” title will not be touched as the 360 has its live gaming where you can play anyone anywhere as long as they have Xbox Live. The 360 does have a bigger range of games out for it but the PS3 hasnt been released yet and the PS3 apparantly will have more contracts to game developers and publishers.
And the last 15% said they will clash as the PS3 will be more powerful but the 360 will have a much better gaming experience. And then theres the Nintendo Wii, well thats a different story but these will all be “old consoles” in the near future as the Xbox 720 and the PS4 or PSG (PlayStation Platenum) will reign over the Console Kingdom.

Well thats all I have to say from what I know but its up to you to choose what you want to waste your money on.

P.S. Rachet and Clank is the best and R C 5 will be Qwarktastic
