Epson has entered into the world of surface computing with the X-Desk. The X-Desk is a 52″ screen that can recognize 16,000 objects simultaneously. Hit the jump for a video of it in action.

The X-Desk uses “Smart Tags” to recognize the objects and the gesture recognition allows for unique object manipulation. We’ve seen lots of do it yourself Surface-imitations, and the X-Desk is already set to compete against Microsoft’s unreleased toy. With so many DIY’s out there, one wonders why Microsoft doesn’t release the software already.

The video is pretty cool, and the speed and manipulation of the objects is smooth. Maybe this will push Microsoft to get the Surface out to more outlets sooner.

If this is competing against MS, which operating system is it using? Not Windows right, it would not make any sense? Is it using Linux?
