I am not sure if media people really have to buy tickets. My assumption is they get the usual press accreditation. Why? Because the media people are only there on day 1 at the keynote. The rest of the week is - due to its technical focus (whohoo... no way... it's a tech conference?! ;-) ) is not relevant for them. And don't forget: there was always an NDA for attendees. So press people are not allowed to report - apart from the keynote. That's why I think they get for the keynote an accreditation, but the ticket sale is not required for them.
What I rather dislike are non-tech people entering the conference. Boss with secretary, marketing staff of companies, just too many non-devs. Those should be disallowed to buy a ticket.

I'm glad they're finally stopping the resale nonsense. It's already a problem how many journalists attend and use up spots best filled by ACTUAL developers! The next thing they need to do is completely stop announcing products at WWDC and focus on development only. There are actually more than 5,000 developers out there who want to learn and interact with Apple at these events but since it's an Apple showcase as well, the spots go to non-developers all too often. Another solution would be to live broadcast the keynote. When it's no longer a scoop to have reporters at the keynote, media companies wouldn't be incentivized to send their reporters like they are now.

They sold out before 7:30 AM Pacific time, we should not see many people from California at the conference.
