World-bending changes: Warcraft III models in Starcraft II

If you are a fan of both of Blizzard's *Craft games, then soon you will get your chance to bring them all together into one messy whole. The game publisher has just announced that it is bringing thousands of Warcraft III assets into the StarCraft II world, first via the Public Test Realm (PTR) channel. This will give testers some time to dream up wars and scenarios, and maybe even reenactments, which Blizzard may spotlight once the patches roll out to the wider public.

Released in 2002, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos became the Warcraft title that would have the most and the longest legacy, some of which we can still feel today. In particular, 2003's Frozen Throne expansion become the foundation on which the very first (and somewhat legally contentious) Defense of the Ancients, more popularly known as DotA. DotA, in turn, would give birth to the dozens of MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games that saturate the market today. Even the famous, or infamous for its addictive lure, World of Warcraft MMORPG takes its roots from the timeline of Warcraft III.

StarCraft II, on the other hand, had a legacy to live up to. By the time it was released in 2010, it had already been 12 years since the first Starcraft became a hit. So far, it seems to be holding up quite well on its own with ongoing patches delivered first through PTR testers. Now those users will have something to drool over in the days ahead.

Blizzard is bringing over tons of assets from the original Warcraft III library, including new hero models for the 4 primary WC3 races. And it isn't just models either. There are also the sound effects for doodads, spells, ambient sounds, and music, just to name some. For now, the assets will be available in PTR but once they go out to the public, Blizzard will be highlighting the best content in a collection that they are aptly calling "Memories of War".
