Except you're missing the fact that all those Google features are also available to Apple users as well. So your comment is pointless and baseless. iMessage is transparent to users, they don't pick to use iMessage or SMS/MMS texting, the Message app determines on the fly whether to send the message through Apple's iMessage servers or over the carrier's system.

My point was that the carriers are already being bypassed over their own networks. I can send SMS texts to friends from the AIM and Yahoo Messenger apps... and receive them.

The beauty of WebRTC is that is doesn't require a standalone app to serve up the video chat. Right now, you're limited to whatever platform - i.e. OS X on the desktop or iOS devices - that Apple is willing to create FaceTime apps for. WebRTC could feasibly put video chat into every browser. No waiting for developers to get around to cooking up a version for your new device: just load up the browser (and how many web-capable devices don't have one of those?) and get chatting.

Facebook are in the best position to compete with iMessage. Facebook email addresses are a waste of time they should have given their Messages system a SMS like UI on smartphones, delivery/read confirmations and an easy way to send both local and facebook photos/videos. With well over 500million accounts and so many people having the app installed on their phone it would be an instant hit.

I'm with MJ on this one. I've used Talk before. But most people I know don't use it. Most people DO have a gmail account, but most of them do not use it. As a consultant who travels to many different companies a year, I have yet to have more than one person give me their google talk id to "chat". AIM, Yahoo and Jabber blow away GTalk in installed base and people who actually USE it on a regular basis.

And to say Apple is covering their eyes and ears is moronic with the type of hardware and software they have been rolling out over the past 10 years.
If you don't LIKE Apple, that's fine. But don't make ignorant blanket statements that have no truth to them.

The beauty about FaceTime is that it does not require a browser to serve up the video chat. The iPod Touch acts like a phone. All you need to do is to fire up the application and call the e-mail address of your recipient. My iPodTouch will ring just like a phone with an incoming FaceTime call. Very slick. All Apple needs to do is write a version of windows and Linux and everybody can call one another free from all over the world by just using a wifi connection an their gadgets, bet it a computer, a mobile unit and whatever. For the moment, this is only limited to the Intel Macs and any iOS devices out there. It is a lot slicker than iChat or Skype for that matter.

I don't really understand the hype and uproar around this (other than the slick way it automatically determines which chat system would be best) ? We've had AIM and Yahoo IM and Jabber, etc for years. They are all free and they work on all platforms across all networks. I don't think the carriers have much to fear or lose anymore than they already have.

Not defending Google here, same thing goes for every company, business, corporation or entrepreneur in the history of the world.

WebRTC

I given it capabilties to form a essential part of future communications I was expecting more comments an article on the fact Google have made webRTC open source and hopefully part of the HTML 5 standards (I using that term to mean all next generation web technology),
Google so far is the only company that in a very public way seem to buying up companies specifically to make the web more open and more standardize WebM and WebRTC. I be surprise if we do not see a prototype service using WebRTC soon, including group chat which was rumor to be added to Google current video chat software but it makes sense to wait until they have finish rebuild those with the new technology.

The thing I like about all this is that there isn't just one vendor. Google has an offering, Apple has one, Microsoft has a couple, and a bunch of clients have been written to access multiple IM services. The thing I don't like is that none of the video offerings are very interesting. We've had one-on-one video chats for a number of years, we have skype, ichat, facetime, they all work well for what it does, and frankly with one-on-one video chats, cross-platform support isn't important. You can always pop up a client that will connect with a friend somewhere with whatever client they have.

What needs cross-platform support is where you are tapping into a group conversation involving several video stream sources. Some companies think that 5 person video conferences are pushing the envelope; others think 10 is a big number. Those are, in fact, laughably tiny numbers. Shops that provide tens of participants in video conferences tend to run on the web with lots of browser plugin magic that drive people nuts when they must install them for the first time, usually just as they're showing up at the site for the conference that's already started :)

Conferences with hundreds of participants. Those require multiple-platform solutions. Sending and receiving video for those is as easy as supporting a popular standard; the hard part is managing everyone's bandwidth and the user experience.
