Windows Phone Rooms feature ending next month

One of the features that Microsoft put into Windows Phone devices when Windows Phone 8 launched a few years back was Rooms. The Rooms feature was an extension for the People hub that let users have chats, share photos, calendars, and other items in a private group. The feature was never very popular with users.

Since it never gained the traction that Microsoft hoped for, the software giant has now announced that it will be ending support for the Rooms service next month. Microsoft says that it is ending support for the feature to make way for new features in Windows 10 that will make it easier for users to stay in touch with people.

Once support for the service ends, users will be able to view their existing rooms but no new rooms can be created. Users won't be able to send messages to the room after March. Anyone who updates to the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones will lose rooms entirely.

There are sure to be some Windows Phone users that will be bummed by the service ending. However, there are plenty of alternatives out there for group messaging that can be used on Microsoft devices.
