similarly, Windows 7 is the 7th major OS release? No, Windows phone 7 is more likely the 10 or 11th attempt. In addition, what happened to that market share after 2006? We're all know the answer to that. Read "theinvisibleduck" 's comments below, which I do agree with some points such as the Metro UI is ugly (IMHO too), Windows 8 designed to be optimized on tablet, not desktop. So it probably won't won many desktop users and hence, "sacrificed" the next windows release.

Ah Microsoft. Finally they have more market share than Palm/HP after what is now years of spending tons of money and that is due to the Apotheker Apocalypse more than anything.

I do have to give it to Microsoft though. They pointing everything towards success in the mobile space. The sacrificed Nokia, (12 dollars a share before announcing the move to Windows Phone and it is now ~1.70 -thanks Elop). In doing so Microsoft got access to some of the best and most thorough navigation software in the world as well as they acclaimed other software, and Nokia's extremely large patent portfolio.

Next Microsoft is going to sacrifice its next Windows release. They have to know they are setting themselves up for another Vista/ME but it WILL make users more familiar with Metro.

They are also sacrificing their legacy phone customers- where Windows Phone 7 is not upgradable to WP8 on any phones. This moves them away from the very well hidden internal software design issues in WP7 that Intel mentioned to Anandtech years ago.

They setup stores across the nation to promote the Windows experience and directly compete with Apple.

They have a very very expensive and extensive ad campaign to get us used to Windows Phone.

They integrated their Phone OS with most of their major popular software, using peoples love of Office and Sharepoint to create exclusivity appeal.

And last but not least they are going into hardware to release their own RT Tablet sacrificing manufacture goodwill from HP, Acer, and probably the rest as well in order to be sure that they control the tablet experience and that it is done right.

This is at least 7 obvious things Microsoft has aligned in order to help them succeed in becoming a major player in the Mobile OS market.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately, Microsoft has missed that the Metro UI is ugly (only my opinion) and I don't like to be controlled- I like my options alot, so I for one will not be a Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8 user. Blackberry 10 looks pretty awesome, but after WebOS Phones were canceled I really don't want the same thing to happen to me again, so I think my next phone will be an Android Nexus phone when the next ones are released.
