Ballmer has no credibility. Let's look at the facts...Zune, Bing, Windows Phone, Windows 8, Surface, aQuantive, etc., etc., etc. How many BILLIONS has MS spent on these duds??

Mainstream consumers have not bought into the WP7. I am not sure what change in the WP8 will change their mind about the platform. Being at Verizon will certainly help. But I don't see any sign of a big surge in WP8. It's not the condition of the app store, WP has the most popular apps at this point. As far as being easier than Android, unless a WP8 user is going to leave their phone at default....the WP7/8 is not easier than an Android phone to customize. In fact, it is the Metro tile UI that is probably causing the lack of interest in Windows phones. It is both monotonous and confusing at the same time. There is to much vertical scrolling...especially after you add any number of live tiles or app tiles. And if you use all of the screen real estate, as you scroll down it's harder to recognize your stop. MS built a pretty good OS behind the home screen. It's to bad that home screen gets in the way.

The third option will be FirefoxOS. WP8 is just too similar to iOS and Android without being meaningfully better. It's not cheaper, or better or more functional. It's Chrysler to Android's GM and Apple's Ford.

WP8 has lots of great things about it, I get that. But it came out late. Saying that it's a great mobile OS doesn't mean that it can succeed. Mac OSX is a great OS, and it's still a minority OS (globally). Xbox 360 is a great console, and still not dominant (globally). That's the way things go sometimes.

actually a bunch of my non-tech friends are in waiting for it, and about half the people at the company are now on the waiting list to change their phones over to it. After I showed them my WP7 that I got almost a year ago, but I knew they were working on WP8 so I advised we wait. So I know of 100+ phones that will be setup for order on release date, and app counts don't mean jack anymore. People are quickly realizing that, having 20 versions of angry birds, is great but not the end all to how well the phone does / works as you know a phone and application. Also well over 50% of what most apps in the market place do is copy what WP8 will have which is synching with Microsoft stack, having Office editing abilities, and being able to connect to various devices. All of which sorta come built into WP8. And for the other apps, stock tickers, news sites, Netflix, etc MS has them already, and since windows 8 apps for the most part copy and paste right onto WP8's it's a write once have everywhere deals. Granted its everywhere with MS device, but its still nice for developers. Since the app store is now for windows desktop, windows tablet, windows phone, and xbox console, developers are streaming in to build the apps.
Overall it really seemed like wp7 was just a beta for the "metro" interface, and now that it's in use by so many people they can really build what they should of in first place windows 8. Biggest catch is not getting blackballed by telecoms cause of the smaller cut in their general profits.

I want to try a wp8 device but right now the unlocked prices are higher than I want to pay. The LG Nexus 4 is a very competent device for 299.99. I dont want to sign any contract with a carrier again and that weighs on my decision.

Are people really waiting for the Windows phone? I know tech writers are but I wonder how many are simply pimping for MS sometimes. In the end, it doesn't even matter if Windows 8 phones are good if they don't have the apps.
