The biggest point that everyone seems to be missing is that WP7 is not competing with Apple and Google for the current owners of smart phones but for the future owners, those people who have not taken the step. This is about 85% of all mobile phone users. The market is wide open. I purchased the Samsung Focus one week ago and got a second phone (for free) for my wife. I have been following the whole smart phone market while waiting for my contract to come to an end. I liked things about all the OSes but the WP7 phone offered a slick interface that was relatively consistent. It allows me to use my Zune pass which is way better (and cheaper) than iTunes. For my wife, who is not a techie at all and can't be bothered trying to figure out which app to download the phone offers all (she thinks) she needs out of the box but allows her to expand with apps. I expect that as people see the phone in use, these phones will find a place among those who are looking for the advantages of a smart phone without the need to delve into the tech. iPhone is great as is Android but these are manual drive vehicles which appeal to fashionistas and aficionados. WP7 is the one with the automatic drive that will eventually fill a long needed gap and help non-techies make the jump to a smart phone. And as time goes on I am sure they will fix the FEW issues and deliver some turbocharging along the way.

Disadvantage -
1) New Platform so dont the reliability and issues with the versions 1
( so far not many)
2) Less App available in the market but soon there will be a lot.
(now approaching over 3000 with 1000s on the horizon (all not including xbox games)
3) Skin and UI is always consistent.
The Cover you chose when sliding up you can chose.
4) No Copy Paste
Fix out next month
5) No Tethering (though I know there is a hack but I never tried on my Samsung Focus)
Its not a hack, just shows something MS hid - until it was ok-ed by vendors
6) Memory upgrade not possible.
Possible just need class 2 chip and backup. Its not "SWAPPABLE" is all.
7) Lack of multitasking for custom apps. (this feature I think it’s limited right now I am ok with it)
Fix out - or hack in 1 or 2 months.
8) In Bing maps I cannot search nearby to specific location I have to rely on whatever bing gives me as nearby list which does not consist all business only some famous business nearby. I like the way google maps give you a option to search near by of your own choice.
Hmmm I cant argue other than its the same thing that Google maps does online, Bing is just Microsoft's version of it. many of googles businesses are not up-to-date as well - but that will be businesses subscribing to MS in the future - many marketing companies are including those businesses to Bing at the moment.

Too little too late?
Why? Do you buy a phone every 5 years or every 1 or 2 ?

It seems like a market where there its never "too late" if you have a good product.

Apple remains at 5% because they suck. Plain and simple. They are the worst to deal with hardware and software vendor-wise. They are simple in some areas but are horribly unintuitive when making changes or tweaks or trying to collaborate with other softwares.

Its a simple OS for simpletons.

I will give you several reasons why WP7 could be a success. Obviously it is each individuals choice to pick the phone they like best. And ultimately MS will have to sell phones.

1) What most people miss is the OEM development platform and that these smart phones ultimately live and die based on the OEMs capabilities. Why you may ask? Well OEMs first have to get theirs phone hardware to work with the OS. Here is where iOS and WP7 have a distinct advantage. The phone hardware integration experience across andriod phones will not be consistent since google puts the onus on OEMs to integrate the hardware and OS. iOS and WP7 provide to the OEMs specs and test requirements for their phones end-to-end. This means iOS and WP7 based phones will have a consistent experience across all hardware. This also means that when it comes to pushing out updates/upgrades that iOS and WP7 have a clear advantage on version and hardware compatibility vs andriod. We are already seeing some of these problems for andriod based phones as OEMs are responsible for pushing out updates and OEMs are not software wizards by any stretch. Mostly they are hardwaare manufacturing wizards. This disadvantage for andriod will become more apparent as time starts to take its toll on Andriod and we see more fracture in andriod os version in the marketplace. Bottom line is google has entrusted OEMs with the ultimate quality of their product and brand and this will prove to be a mistake.

4) As far as app development goes Google and WP7 have the clear advantage.iOS based app development is so closed, from a developer perspective. Apple sees this as controlling quality but developers see it as intrusive. Apple's culture is not developer focused and Google and MS are. So with alternative app offering platforms iOS may become less of a draw for developers over time. Again no telling how this will actually play out but I can tell you Apple better think hard about this one.

3) Phone features. I bet you ask the average Joe how much they use say "Copy and Paste" the answer comes back "not often". Not saying WP7 should not have it. They should! But from a stand point of feature priority it is clear they made the right decision to go ahead and release the WP7 for the 2010 holidays and get the feature on later with a patch. I am not sure how anyone could truly argue this point.Ultimately with regards to features WP7 will catch up to Andriod and iPhone. And at tehir current pace that could be mid 2011. And in fact Andriod and iPhone need to do some catching up to WP7 when it comes to gaming and tv entertainment. I know it sounds somewhat funny but if XBOX actually can make some kind of tv offering (e.g. they already have netflix, zune, espn and hulu(2011)) and WP7 can easily integrate with that then that leaves iOS and Andriod wondering where their multi-media entertainment story really lies. They will have to work on that one. Neither Google nor Apple have a good tv/gaming story which is the entre intot eh biggest screen in the house. No one has a better chance on that front than MS but I guess I must concede that they have to execute in the consumer side which has not historically been their strong suit.

MS has stated they are in the WP7 for the long haul and if you dont think they have the $ to do it you better do some research. They may not start with a flash but there is still a lot of time left in the game. This is early 1st quarter... lol! Ultimately I hope all three succeed. THis give us more choice and helps provide good competition for features and helpful apps.

Did you bring up World of Warcraft because that is one of the two games Apple users can actually play? Unlike you Apple Kool-aid drinkers, I know enough about computers to know that Apple is a scam. They sell the same PC parts that everyone else does, then stick a fruit logo on the back and call it magic. You have been blinded by Steve Jobs' turtleneck, and are unable to see just how bad a company Apple is. MS is still worth more and has a higher profit margin than Apple, please don't believe shoddy journalism that says different. And outside of the US, Apple's marketshare is pathetic.

Maybe we're just a country of Apple-loving idiots.

It's just hillarious the anti-MS journalists and FUD generators that pull data out of nothing. The 40,000 launch day totals were unsubstantiated from an unknown source. Part of this article is based on MobilePlease. Take a gander at this source:

MobilesPlease is not a cellphone retailer, but an aggregator of popular deals — it doesn’t sell a single phone. It also has zero access to data from mobile operators like Oranage in the United Kingdom.

According to Compete.com and Alexia.com, a little over 1,000 people actually visit MobilePlease's website, meaning no one buys a damn phone - even if it's Android - from them.

BUT there is one reason why people go to MobilePlease. According to Alexa, 60% of their web traffic is generated from their blog, which is not their website that links to other websites to sell phones.

It's just plain poor journalism to rely on unsubstantiated sources. Bloggers, however, are not held to the same journalistic standards that REAL journalists adhere. If you don't like WP7 or MS, just create a blog, write whatever crap you desire and never have to back it up. Seems par for the course for some of these dimwits.

You're kidding yourself if you don't think this site has an Apple Bias. Do an aggregate search of all the articles mentioning Apple and Microsoft. Guaranteed almost all the Microsoft articles are negative, while the Apple ones are positive. This site even writes articles DEFENDING decisions made by Apple, without provocation! When have you done that for Microsoft? Need an even easier way to see the bias? Just look at the pictures the reviewers on this site submit. All iPads, all Macbooks. Most of the reviewers have drunk the Apple Kool-aid, and apparently the outcome of this is to bash MS and defend Apple at all costs. Not one mention of Apple's dwindling computer marketshare worldwide? Unsafe banking apps on iOS? Of course not.

Minimalist is a good thing. Simple, easy navigation is even better. As a computer professional I have had to help clients with their smart phones. Until the WP7 phones came out the iPhone had the best interface and the worst email. Blackberry the best email and worst interface. Android came in last in both catagories.

As a graduate industrial designer, the simple, clean interface of the WP7 phone is a breath of fresh air. I like having a limited number if tiles on my home screen and those are customizable to things I use ALL the time, not once in a while.

The WP7 is my first smart phone. When Sony got out of the PDA business, I was using a Clie' NX-80 with the Palm OS. I immediately went out and bought two more and put them away. Number three is now on it's last legs so I had to buy a smart phone. I bought a Samsung Focus for me and like it so much that I went back and bought two more for my wife and son.

I bought my Samsung Focus on Thursday after the Monday release. It is my first smart phone and I really love it. I am looking forward to the OS updates to correct some obvious missing features.

Perhaps the best review comes from my 19 year old son, a student at Georgia Tech. He had been campaigning for a iPhone. After 30 minutes of playing with my Samsung Focus, he said to hell with the, he wants the WP7 Samsung Focus. The "to hell with" comment is part of Georgia Tech culture usually refering to a rival school/football team.

My wife announced that she wants on also so I took advantage of last weekend's AT&T 2 for 1 sale and they will both have new Samsung Focus WP7 phones under the Christmas tree. Shhh! Don't tell them!

I mean why cant we judge them now? They released it for sale which opens the gates for judging. Its not like its out on beta they are selling it. They should have finshed the OS to compete against Android and iOS period. I want this platform to do good but i am a bit PO'd that it took them this long to figure out that this space in the tech world is huge and they left their extremely outdated out there for people to use. I have had a few MS phones and had to hack to death for it to run the way i wanted it too. Warranted i had fun doing it but there were things that they could have resolved that many users complained about that was ignored.

1) Yet to be proven since the phone hasnt had an update yet. And all this talk about Android fragmentation is bogus. Lets not forget how quickly Android releases their updates for, their were 3-4 significant updates in one year for Android which isnt done by anyone else in the industry. Most high end Android phones get the updates inside 6 months. which is still faster then most phones. The low-end Android phones dont havent gotten updates can be excluded because most of those users dont care for them. MS (having formly been an MS phone user) never received updates and it took for MS to get kicked in the nuts to realize they were losing ground in a world they should have dominated in the first place.
2)Agreed but this is great but all other Phone OS's have a decent solution for this. This is the space that microsoft should focus on and try to people to get away from Blackberry. This should be their Primary focus, which really is what got MS hot back in the 90's.
3)ZunePass owns
4)Android has all of this and in my opinion has better cloud solutions but this really comes down to preference
5)Preference based opinion. Android has plenty of options and kick ass widgets that do this and more
6)Yet to be seen to really be great. From what i have seen it has horrible load times. Has promise but again yet to be seen
7)Preference based opinion, your not really pointing out anything that shows the Calendar being better or unique
8)Preference based opinion
9)Preference based opinion

So now on your list of advantages really are about two things ZunePass and Office integration. Xbox live has yet to be proven to be really a plus but has great promise if MS doesnt screw it up. The rest of your list are alot of preference based opinions which dont count as advantages.

Android offers customization, mutlitasking, less buggy, Google cloud intergration, copy/paste, widgets, large APP market, and plenty more.

Just remember that anecdotal evidence is not evidence. Ever. Sorry, I just read lots of science/skeptic blogs. Anecdotes are almost completely to blame for the Antivaxx movement. >.< Tangent! Sorry.

I'm not saying the reports of low sales aren't true. Just saying that you can never rely on what one person said at one store or establishment. MS knows the true figures. They probably aren't that great, honestly.

One guaranteed factor is shortage of devices. When I purchased mine the store only had about 4 in the store. The marketing online and TV is certainly there. The other marketing needs to be at the stores. It seemed very low key if you ask me. I tried three different AT&T stores. The first had a small display setup to show the device. The second had no setup but had a sign on the window. The third had a sign and no display. I should note, none of the stores had a phone in stock. I had to wait until after lunch before one of them got a phone. Shortage of product and lack of in store marketing doesn't help their cause.

The other probability is interest in the device. Android and iPhone are deeply entrenched in the market. People are skeptical to leave their devices for a new one. Some might be locked up in contracts as well.

Also, the sting of Windows Mobile 6.5 might make some weary. It's going to take people who actually buy and use the device to tell friends and colleagues "Hey this thing is really nice. Here have a look." MS can advertise until they break the bank but the word on the street has to be "This is a solid and competitive device/OS."

The only thing MS can do is support this product without faltering. Its very sound and despite lacking some 'duh!' features I'm enjoying it very much. If they wish to compete or take a portion of the market, they'll need to treat it like it's the #1 selling device on the planet!

I do like that more apps show up in the marketplace everyday. That is encouraging at least. Xbox integration is pretty neat as well. Anyhow, the thought of owning a phone that isn't supported doesn't sit well with me. Do you hear me now, Microsoft? :)

I could see a desperate attempt to promote Android and iPhone sales. I had been an admirer of iPhone since it had released, but to be non-biased , I am pretty sure Windows Phone 7 will outsell all these platforms in the coming years. Currently I own a Samsung Focus for last one month and pretty much sure all these desperate promotion attempt will not be able to outcast Windows Phone 7 , until and unless competitors bring something which can stand with Windows Phone 7.

Gone are the first iphone days when some fanboy could make people beleive their views by posting something on the internet. People know the basis behind such postings and one who post should have second thoughts, since most probably people will experiment with the platforms lambasted going to the store and cat will be out of the bag and probably backfire.

In Brief, I dont see any ground WP7 fail and to be frank its the best available in the market right now. Future I dont know. I love to hate Microsoft, but facts remain facts !

earlier used IPhone and recently got my new Samsung focus and these are my observation
Advantages with WP7
1) No fragmented version like Android so updates will be avbl as on when they are released. There wont be anything such this apps are working only with this version liek android
2) Office Integration
3) Zune Pass rocks than ITunes Great collection and unlimited songs and 10 songs per month
4) Sharepoint and Skydrive Integration where I can upload my photos, videos, docuements etc…
5) Facebook and live tiles sleek UI experience
6) XBox live there are coupl of games and I hope there will be a lot very soon.
7) I like the Calender it’s real useful
8) I like the back button and it’ like history in browser so you can go back and open any previous application or where you left the earlier. This feature I think is real help if you are in hurry.
9) I like the search but I am not using it properly.

Disadvantage -
1) New Platform so dont the reliablility and isses with the versions 1
2) Less App avbl in the market but soon there will be a lot.
3) Skin and UI is always consistent
4) No Copy Paste
5) No Teethering (though I know there is a hack but I never tried on my Samsung Focus)
6) Memeory upgrade not possible.
7) Lack of multitasking for custom apps. (this feature I think it’s limited rigth now I am ok with it)
8) In Bing maps I cannot search nearby to specific location I have to rely on whatever bing gives me as nearby list which does not consist all business only some famous business nearby. I like the way google maps give you a option to search near by of your own choice.

To me, WP7 doesn't look sexy at all.

Very simple colors, no variations. I prefer icons.

Android and iOS both look great. WP7 looks very minimalistic with those one-colour, blocky desktops.

Sir, MobilesPlease is not a cellphone retailer, but an aggregator of cellphone deals -- it doesn't sell a single phone. Also, it has zero access to sales data from true mobile retailers in the United Kingdom, so when they report Android is outselling WP7 15:1, at which store?

Even if you consider the report to be true, a serious journalist would see the type of penetration MobilesPlease has on the cellphone market in the United Kingdom. According to Compete.com, only a little over 1,000 people actually visited their website, meaning no one even shops at MobilesPlease.

Agree here. I really don't see many arguments in favour of the WP7. I could say the same for iPhone really, i feel its very outdated in many areas. Android is sleek, has custom features, widgets, a much smarter gui, and overall an immensely better experience vs. iOS. I have no tried WP7, but from the UI specs (and looks) it seems too minimalistic, and also completely lack any customization. Not to mention, who the hell uses windows online services anymore? It's all about google.

No need to be perceived as a 'hater' of Windows new mobile phone platform; head over to their Windows Phone social Web site - while there are a lot of threads and plenty of views, there appears to be very little interaction. Not only that but this platform was released so quick a lot of basic features, at least what is already available on the leader platform Android, are still missing. Sure MS promised some of these would be coming, but yet another indication they were pressured to released yet another unfinished product. Someone please tell me why I should purchase any WMP7 product over an Android phone. Give me just one reason and I will concede!

At the end of the day it is safe to say, whether or not one unhappy poster on this Web site runs out and purchases a Windows mobile phone next week or not, WMP7 will remain in last place. Too little too late.

Apple bias? Aside from a single mention of the iPhone, the stats are all about WP7, Android and Symbian. Not sure where the Apple FUD comes in, tbh.

As you'll know if you've read our WP7 reviews, we're big fans of the OS. Yes, it still needs work, but it's also very new in comparison to rival platforms. However we're not going to stop reporting on WP7 news simply because it doesn't fit in with our positive opinion. Now *that* would be biased.

More Apple-bias FUD. They can give us "anecdotal evidence", but that won't stop MS from taking back a good portion of the mobile market in a few years. I'm getting a Samsung Focus within the week, so make sure to count that in your silly "anecdotal" evidence.
